That's Done: I CANCELLED AUDIBLE

I've been an #Audiobook listener for 20+ years, mostly because I'm in the car a lot and having kids kills your brain for reading at night. I had over 500 books in my #Audible library but it's time to go.

Doing business with #JeffBezos has just become too unpalatable. That and @pluralistic has taught me to reject DRM and he helped me find https://Libro.fm - I signed up for a membership and have already bought and pre-ordered 6 new books over there.

Buy audiobooks & support local bookstores

Libro.fm makes it possible for you to buy audiobooks directly through local bookstores.

Libro.fm

I HIGHLY recommend Libro.fm , not only are they DRM free but you can chose a local bookshop to support with your purchases a lot like Bookshop.org (I only buy books online from them) and local bookshops.

(that's my referral link to Libro.fm, feel free not to use it - you earn books by referrals )

I haven't used any #microsoft or #Adobe products willingly in years and have been moving away from #google as well.

If you cancel your membership at Audible you can use a program like Libation to download the books you've bought to your computer, which I was doing already because when you "purchase" something from a streaming service they can take it away, change it or alter it without notice or recourse.

https://github.com/rmcrackan/Libation/releases/tag/v12.4.9

This happened with several books where they took away the original, superior version and replaced it with a new reader or altered version.

If you can't buy it or download it and keep it without someone's tool to use it, you do not own it.

All those movies, TV shows and stuff you "purchased" from Amazon or some other services? They can take it away tomorrow and you have no recourse.

My next step is finding some way to get my library accessible from my phone remotely for the books I bought (I like and use Libro.fm' s app) which will be another project

I feel good about this.

@kbsez I left Audible last year and have been listening to podcasts and audiobooks from my local library.

Thank you for the recommendation!
@kbsez oooooh! Libro.fm has cory doctorow's books. ❤️
@kbsez @pluralistic @PapyrusBrigade I'm in the process of switching over as well. The hard part (for me) is some of my favourite authors are Audible-exclusive. ☹️
@kbsez @pluralistic congrats, after listening for so long, that must be a huge jump to make.

@kbsez @pluralistic there is a growing movement of using the open RSS / podcast mechanism for audiobooks. The Podcasting 2.0 namespace supports the audiobook media type, and pioneers like @truefans are even integrating with the fediverse to create a game-changing “value exchange” to take back the power from big-tech middlemen.
Using the same idea for music has already started to take off, and audiobooks and courses will be next. This is really something to watch.
