Tried a new coffee shop. Was good all around but not like exciting. Then someone was a dick to one of the cashiers and the way the place handled it has made me a fan.

manager saw and intervened, tried to deescalate but did not capitulate; guy flew off the handle, manager politely asked him to leave 1/3

guy refused with “what are you gonna do about it?!”; big tattooed dude at a table gets up and says “get out. Now.”

guy: “stay out of this!!”

dude: “I’m the owner. You’re leaving. Walking or flying.”

guy: “FINE!” (Storms toward the door) “I’m never coming back!”

dude: “tell your friends!”

2/3

The place was kind of in quiet awe for a couple minutes, and I saw the manager tell the cashier to go take 5 while he covered cash. The owner dude popped behind the counter to help out for a bit.

Just… full marks. That’s how you do it. No yelling, no coddling, no bullshit just absolute calm defense of your people and refusal to tolerate bad behavior. 3/3

@calcifer "tell your friends" is a top notch response there, lol

"I'm going to make this cost you business!"
"Cool, I'm pretty sure only assholes take you seriously!"

@unlofl right? Like I’m sure your friends are just as delightful. It’s nice to see an owner understand that creating a pleasant environment for everyone (including workers!) is more valuable then a few bucks from a few assholes.

@calcifer safe spaces are built on practices of exclusion (and inclusion)

@unlofl

@melioristicmarie @calcifer @unlofl In a really healthy community, someone will check in on the other person as well, or maybe feeling that's hopeless at least warn whoever they're probably on their way to see that so-and-so is going be in a *mood*!

Healthy gossip is a thing.

@unlofl @Binder @calcifer Casually turns page in newspaper. “Oh nooo. /s”
@unlofl @calcifer I had someone tell me this as a waiter. My response was "Both of them. Im sure that will hurt our business." Terrible people deserve NOTHING.
@calcifer That's EXACTLY how you do it. Fuckin' A.
@thraeryn right? It’s not just how the owner acted either. It’s clear from how the manager and cashier acted that they knew they would have support for not tolerating assholes.

@calcifer Yep. They felt supported, and you only feel that supported at work with past positive experiences to back it up.

I'm fer it.

@thraeryn @calcifer

Yes. And I notice that the cashier and the manager knew that the owner was right there, and most likely hearing and observing the interaction as it happened.

I would go out of my way to support any business (and their managers and owners) who operate like this.

Good Job! Right on track! ❣️

@calcifer @thraeryn When I had a shop I put a notice where customers at the counter couldn't miss it: "This store has a zero tolerance policy on bullying. Offenders must leave the store." It worked a treat.
@anne_twain @calcifer @thraeryn There are signs like this at my local CVS. I asked the pharmacist if people really behaved that badly, her response was "you would be surprised how often."
@calcifer great recommendation but... you didn't name the shop?
@moira I have good reasons not to let the Internet know where I live with that level of precision
@calcifer @moira Nothing like when someone tries to act tough and then discovers he badly misjudged the situation. That would make a good movie scene.

@mike805
Have you seen Bronx Tale? There is a scene in that movie that I immediately thought of when reading this story. "Now youse can't leave."

@calcifer @moira Hope you've recommended the place to people you know off-line then.
@Daveosaurus @moira definitely have, and I’ll definitely make a point of going back. Left them a stellar review too.
@calcifer This helped my day be lots better. “Walking or Flying” should be a plaque somewhere.

@calcifer

Where is this place? Would love to try it out!

@calcifer absolute first class. I hope this owner gets great word-of-mouth from staff and customers.

@calcifer But … was Big Tattooed Dude really the owner?

It'd be funny if he was just improvising 😂

@twobiscuits @calcifer

Given
"The owner dude popped behind the counter to help out for a bit."

I think we can be sure that the "big tattooed" guy was the owner, as he said.

@twobiscuits @calcifer I mean, even if he were improvising, would anyone in their right mind stop him? He was doing the Lawd's work that day
@twobiscuits I’m guessing he was, given he hopped behind the bar to help out after. But I suppose it’s possible he just works there?
@calcifer Great story! Thank you for sharing.
@calcifer we've all known somebody who told this story from the asshole's perspective. You hear a story, you know they were being an asshole, and that place handled it perfectly, no notes. Tell your friends is objectively the perfect response. Can we fund a trophy for this guy?
@calcifer yup. And follow up support for the staff member! Well played that guy.
@calcifer I was waiting for the part where everyone does a slow clap, because that's one of moments.

@calcifer "walking or flying"

quality <3

@calcifer “Tell your friends” is perfect.
@calcifer
I would have just added "if you have any."
@calcifer @arubis “tell your friends” in this context has gotta be one of the most badass lines. Like “not only am I fine if you don’t come back, it’s not even a threat if you tell all your friends not to come. We *want* them to know not to come, because we don’t want anyone who would be willing to be friends with you. And we don’t even care if they come looking for a fight.”

@calcifer @catsalad
Awesome scene. As someone else said, I'd live it if the tattoo guy wasn't the owner, just standing up for them.

Reminds me of a scene from the Jack Reacher books. It was in the Tom Cruise film, but it was better in the book. Bunch of 'Bros' picking on a girl and he defends her. There's 5 of them, one of him and he puts them all in hospital. 🤣

@DodoTheDev @calcifer @catsalad I'd like it better if he really is.

Bosses don't stand up for their employees anymore. They have taken "the customer is always right" way too far.

@calcifer Wow. So much wow on this. It's rare enough that managers stick up for their employees, but for the owner to willingly say don't come back and tell your friends is just... amazing... I guess standards still exist out there somewhere after all.

One thing none of the businesses without standards don't seem to realize is when they allow such people to create a hostile environment, that too can cost them customers. They're so afraid of losing a few short term sales they forget that long term exists too. It sounds like maybe the owner gets this though...
