After reading about the Dallas cop stealing from Apple Stores and selling on Facebook I looked (not just in DFW) and found a bunch of new Aipods Max for ~$100. Wonder what the scam is…
As a fan of buying discounted/used electronics I'm annoyed at how impossible it is to buy a cheap AirPods Max. The listings on eBay are full of un-filterable obvious scams and the fakes are so good even a reputable looking seller might be selling one.

After many weeks of keeping an eye out for an Airpods Max deal I ended up finally get WH-1000XM4. Why, first and second they are a ton cheaper ($200 vs $$380+) than the Max, then also lighter + more comfortable, better case and built in 3.5” jack.

My main concern is battery life on a “new" headphone that could've possibly been made 5 years ago.

Because I can never leave well enough alone I also picked up the Cambridge P100s to compare. Crazy long battery life that is user replaceable. USB-C audio support + charging at the same time. Noticeably longer BT range. Transparency mode seems better for voices. Heavier, the headband is less comfortable and the clamping pressure is uncomfortable in a different way. Doesn't fold.

According to most reviews they sound better than the XM4, but still playing with both.

@paul Is the ANC any good?
@buck it seems decent, but it's not really what I bought these for (transparency is what I prefer to leave headphones in). I'll play with it more though over the next few days.
@paul Thx ... Have a noisy A/C unit on my roof (neighbor unit) and in search of an "all day over ear" with great ANC to deal with it. APMs were just not comfy enough for many hours for me.
@buck I'd give the XM6 a go in that case, at least assuming the weight was the big issue with the APMs.
@paul Bose Quietcomfort are far and away the most comfortable for me, especially if you wear glasses. I’ve tried the MX4 and the AirPods Max but keep going back to Bose
@nicholasjones I can't do Bose, I know they invented the category and I actually 100% believe they are the most comfy but still have an irrational dislike of them.
@paul Despite all of this, I *still* feel like I'm going to buy a pair of AirPods Max (*if* they ever release a new model) solely because I'm willing to sacrifice $ and other things for seamless switching between devices. If I'm honest with myself, that's what I'm optimizing for nowadays.
@irace I agree, if they had an actual new model + a case that didn't suck I'd have probably gotten that instead.
@paul @irace might I interest you gentlemen in the Beats Pro over the ear headphones. Basically the AirPods Max feature wise and fit in a case.
@slaine @irace never seen a review of those that wasn't fairly negative.
@paul @irace hmm interesting. I got a pair last year for my long haul flights to California and for the gym. The ANC is great, they’re light weight and fold up neatly into a case in my backpack. Sound quality is good enough that I don’t notice any problems. I’m happy with them for sure.
@paul I bought mine refurb 3 years ago and the battery is still great (or at least good enough to get me through more than one 10 hour flight without a recharge). I'm sure the newer models have even better ANC but I don't have any real complaints about the XM4.
@paul if it makes you feel better, my XM3s from 2019 still have amazing battery life.
@paul my WH-1000XM (yes the first generation) still works a full 8 hours workday after 8 years.
@paul really hoping you meant 3.5 mm headphone jack (unless these things truly ARE huge)! ;)
@tantramar ha, I was too busy thinking of they are 2.5 or 3.5 that I didn’t even notice.
@paul on Friday I saw open box/refurbished XM6 models for $280. Was very tempted. It was here https://secondipity.com/pages/search-results-page?q=XM6 with code W6XA8VDHJ9KS (not sure if code is still live).

@narles anecdotal comments say the XM4 has better build quality and less pressure (which really bugs me).
@paul oh nice! I didn’t know that. I’ll have to research that a little more.
@paul How is switching between multiple devices? I tried a pair a few years ago and ended up returning them. Hopefully they’ve improved it.
@ellenich @paul Not great. I find I need to tell the first device to forget and then re-pair with the second. I believe the MX5 is better at this.
@paul the battery is good but the ultra lame pairing and auto-mute on calls is killing me. Not gonna get them again
@paul I have those and they are awesome. In addition to the pro’s you already mentioned, they fold up and travel well. ANC isn’t as good as the AirPods Max, but is still very good
@paul My Airpods Max died after three years and moderate usage. The forums are full of stories like mine. What I want to say: you did the right thing!
@paul I have the same pair, got them 3+ years ago. They are being used daily for 8+ hours and I’ve never had any issues with battery. Very light and comfortable, I only wish the charging was wireless but not a biggie.
@paul Sony XMs are easily repaired and parts are readily available I’ve found.
@paul check Swappa, iirc they verify all serial numbers before you can post a listing.
@paul I have a pair on FB Marketplace that I’ve upgraded to USB C if you’re interested.
@paul I have an original silver pair from when they launched (aka lightening) — original box too. I’ve been thinking about selling them, if you want to make me an offer (i’d ship from the PNW)
@paul The r/airpodsmax subreddit is full of "are these legit?” posts…
