@th_schmid That's so wrong. Not that I think ChatGPT is what people use it for but if you have a question ChatGPT can help you where you can look into. I don't think you can't say that about tarot.
@w_wobble At least with tarot and astrology you're hallucinating the meaning you find in random noise yourself.

@lambdatotoro @w_wobble

A friend of mine many years ago suggested* picking a good** astrologer, choosing the star sign that best describes you, and then following that. A good astrologer, he said, would tailor their advice to the temperament that they'd assigned to the star sign and so it'd be good advice on its own.

* Like many things he said, I'm not sure if he was joking or not.

** This is the hard part, I'm guessing.

@suetanvil I mean that's not *un*reasonable...
Of course the precise arrangements of constellations have no effect on your life, but these things can be a way of getting your own brain thinking more abstractly about what is currently important to you.
But if you're willing to spend money to make some sense of your life I'd still suggest a coach or a therapist over a astrologer or tarot reader.
@lambdatotoro @suetanvil Shrinks are tarot readers for people with more money
@howtophil Hard disagree.
@lambdatotoro Harder disagree with your hard disagree

@howtophil @lambdatotoro

So, uh, how did that make you feel?

@lambdatotoro

Absolutely.

The other thing this assumes is that the astrologer is targeting the subset of people born during a particular date range that *matches the astrologer's description of them* and then writing actual good advice for them. They might exist, but the more expedient strategy would be to write the kind of stuff that is vague enough that anyone can apply it to their lives.

(Recall: my friend had a very subtle sense of humour.)

@suetanvil @lambdatotoro @w_wobble that just sounds like Myers–Briggs types with extra steps.

@sstendahl @lambdatotoro @w_wobble

Arguably fewer, since you don't need to do a test.

@w_wobble @th_schmid ChatGPT is a pathological liar. What it says cannot be trusted wholly and barely in part.
@w_wobble @th_schmid ChatGPT is less useful than a one-card tarot deck.
@w_wobble @th_schmid I think you misspelled "Wikipedia".
@th_schmid it's the same thing except slop generators more often that not are also tied into capitalism
@th_schmid I’d generalise that gender-wise.
@th_schmid same applies to religion 😆
@th_schmid i've made an observation (very small sample size, kinda more anecdotal than based on actual evidence) that the more blindly somebody trusts in chatgpt or other LLMs, the more they also believe in astrology, supernatural systems of justice (like karma or a punishing/rewarding god), concepts of 'luck' and so on🫠

@CIMB4 @th_schmid
I certainly think chat bots hold allure for people with supernatural interests, but i think it also holds interest for people who would look at all of those things and say "that's not science"

I've read that it uses the same methods as cold reading psychics where generally the target is trying to get something for themselves from someone that knows nothing about them, but they are so motivated to "be understood" that they will not see any indications that say they weren't.

@th_schmid My guess would be that on average, tarot readers and astrologers are doing better care work than "AI" (which is more likely to turbocharge any mental health issues), so yeah.
@th_schmid it's now official, ChatGPT is just pseudoscience for men

@GrosPapa @th_schmid
"AI for structured guidance"

The machine that told me to genetically modify apples in order to make trees out of them claims it provides "structured guidance" 🫠

@th_schmid this one thinks not only can you generalize the gender here but also that tarot and astrology are less harmful
the only thing that believing in divination does is that it can cause somebody to come up with silly ideas on their own based on the prompting of tarot cards or whatever (this one thinks that can actually be helpful as a creative thinking tool). Generative AI directly feeds people bullshit
@th_schmid
I make fun of everybody who is seriously using tarot, not only women. I do not use AI.

@th_schmid Melissa got it! RIGHT!

On A side note : Tarot card are / can be Much more Prettier 🫣😬

@th_schmid men are not allowed to make fun of women, period.

but yes, seeking answers in chatgpt does have a degree of desperation in it.

@th_schmid Hey now, let's be fair. Astrology is at least based on reason and observation, it just has some false premises.
@th_schmid 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
@th_schmid joke's on your i get my advice from the i ching, which i then feed into chatgpt!

@lritter @th_schmid

Hagbard Celine agrees with you.

@wakame @th_schmid that is an unexpected yet absolutely appropriate reference.
@th_schmid Gonna go one step further and say that tarot or astrology are actually substantially better, as they are open to interpretation and can be frameworks upon which to project your fears, concerns, and needs, work through with them, and solve things (like suddenly having a vocabulary, and time set aside, for these things).

ChatGPT, on the other hand, has none of that.
@th_schmid (to be clear, this isn't even touching on any spiritual or metaphysical themes or beliefs or anything. The mechanics themselves can be quite useful on their own absent of all these; tool guided introspection, basically).
@th_schmid Men who seek advice from chatgpt are no longer allowed.
@th_schmid this take is so correct you have people all over fediverse defending both of these equally in your comments and that's really hard to find.

@th_schmid

ChatGPT is the new Ouija board. 😐

@Su_G @th_schmid that people use to contact the never living to get fluffed, projecting sentience from their own barely living brains as they fall in love with their own egos. It’s an ignorant narcissist manufacturing machine.

@Su_G @th_schmid

Except people use it to contact the never living to get fluffed, projecting sentience from their own barely living brains as they fall in love with their own egos. It’s an ignorant narcissist manufacturing machine.

@th_schmid no one should make fun of a mental illness either way 💀
@th_schmid But we are allowed to make fun of both of them.
@th_schmid All I know is I keep ending up in messy situationships with people who turn out to be Scorpios...
@th_schmid I didn't know I could use astrology to write Perl scripts.
@th_schmid since i do neither i will continue happily making fun of both
@th_schmid new rule: nobody is allowed to use ChatGPT, ever.
@th_schmid

Why just men seeking advice from LLMs?
@th_schmid I totally support this!
@th_schmid But we who don't use ChatGPT are allowed to? Great.
@th_schmid i can get behind this

@th_schmid

I will be using this in multiple forms, put back together and as written. Full on theft.

Thank you Thomas.
