Finally got my Dad’s photographic archive under my roof!

Opened a random box, and out popped a lovely pair of Raquel Welsh…shots.

I’ll be posting a shedload more in the coming days. It’ll be a jaunt through the absolute golden era of photography. Never to be repeated (sadly).

@blabberlicious What a great story of a life full of art and love!
@blabberlicious I keep thinking of the film Blow Up when I see your posts about him, and his photos. He must have related to that world. What an amazing time to be alive, and doing what he was doing.
@alexanderdyas
Yes. It would have broken his heart to see how wantonly photography is being destroyed.

@alexanderdyas
Reminded : I have an old friend called Anthony Stern. A glass blower. He was into shooting gorilla films in the 60s, and made the first psychedelic pop promo for pink Floyd.

Shot 35mm all through the period.
I have some amazing pics of Stones, Julie Christie at a squat party and Cat Steven’s getting hammered in Battersea Park!

Amazing studio. Sadly Parkinson’s has claimed his talent 🥲

‘In camera’ was where it was at. He had a legion of model makers and background artists. Even the fag packets were oversized models. The hand models were very well paid, and notoriously debauched.

#photography #filmphotography #commercialphotography

His benson and hedges work really shows off his compositional brilliance. He went all over the world doing this series. It was the golden age.

#photography #filmphotography #commercialphotography

A test he did on Polaroid. Two shots., cut together by hand.

#photography #filmphotography #commercialphotography

@blabberlicious this is Polaroid? Wow.
@cdevroe
Yus. Just a a little sketch.
@blabberlicious pack film? I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Polaroid with this fidelity and range.
@cdevroe
Probably a Polaroid Pack Film Back, for his medium format Hasselblad.

Some more Fag pictures. These are just magazine pulls, laminated.

(Apologies) This is under glass in my kitchen. One of his last great food pics for the Guardian.

Compositional masterpiece, in my book.

He called himself ‘The Peashooter’, when asked what he did.

#photography #filmphotography #commercialphotography

@blabberlicious Apologies for what?!
@davep
For my poor attempts to photograph it!

Hipster, Aged 20:
A penny for his thoughts.

#photography #filmphotography #commercialphotography

@blabberlicious Your dad went to an art or design school, yes?
@bosak
Yes. Studied photography in London. I’ll post some of his compositional/ lighting course prints. They are lovely.

Hipster central. First flat with Mum.

(Apologies for reposting. Just adding to this thread.)

Hipster Central (Interior detail)

Have a good peep at the items on show. Absolutely bonkers.

#photography #filmphotography #commercialphotography

@blabberlicious I'm fairly certain I would have gotten along with your Dad.
@cdevroe
He loved excruciating puns: visual and literary. A Renaissance Man with a smattering of Goon.
@blabberlicious The past is an other country. Makes me think of Serge Gainsbourg. Beautiful photos.

When dad left Rosetti Studios in Chelsea, after 44 years, he meticulously photographed many of the people he’d worked with, including some notable shooters.

Also the cleaning lady.

Such a different time. When you went ‘all in’ with a crew of talented people, you made bloody sure they got your work.

Feels so different now. Camaraderie just doesn’t pay, like it did. Sacrificed for the god of the internet, and its disinterest in quality.

#photography #filmphotography #commercialphotography

@blabberlicious Just wanted to say thanks for sharing these. Amazing photography. The whole series.

@ezwal
Thanks. I shudder to think how annoyed my dad would be at my scatty phone shots of his work.

When I have a bit of free time, I will go nuts on my tranny scanner and put up something decent.

Ideally, I’d love to be able to stage an exhibiton of his work, through the ages. I just don’t know where or who whole be interested in doing it.

@blabberlicious you could try the Royal Photographic Society who often have exhibitions of interesting work. They may be interested in helping you curate it too. Ah, wait. This is me assuming you are in the UK, which of course you may not be 😬

@cazmockett
I am in London. It has crossed my mind. A lot of places now insist on only submitting scanned work, which makes it crazy expensive.

It’s a dream to exhibit his work. I might give it a go. Thanks. 🙏🏻

Smoking was a big problem in the 70s.

My dad’s mate, Barry Lategan, who discovered Twiggy.
Just seen he passed away in august. 🥲

I’ll scan these properly when I have time.

By pure chance, I found a print of the Chelsea studio set up, while this was being taken.

#photography #filmphotography #commercialphotography

@blabberlicious What was the ad for?
@Nickiquote
I’ll have to dig it out. His book covers are great too.
@blabberlicious I’d love to see some.

Tessa Trager, Photographer.
My Dad’s next door neighbour at Rossetti Studios, Chelsea.

A fabulous eye. Check out her work here 👇

The Painter Mike Pope and his partner, Ros.
He was the chairman of the Chelsea Arts Club, and one of my Dad's oldest friends. Looking at this, I'd say Ros is half a bottle of wine into recreating a pose from one of his early paintings!

Unearthed an interesting panoramic shot of my dad’s photographic studio in Chelsea.

Peak 1970s.

@blabberlicious Another instant favorite 🤩
@blabberlicious how did they make this? Composite?
@cdevroe
A series of large format Polaroids cut and pasted together! Old school photoshop.

@blabberlicious Have fun curating this! I'm looking forward to seeing more.
@blabberlicious @HornedLivestock@mastodon.scot Great colors! Slide film?
@blabberlicious 😍 thank you!! These are gorgeous. I love her.
@blabberlicious OMG I LOVE THESE!!! 🤩🤩
@boby_biq
I try and get hold of my brother’s tranny scanner. So I can put up more.

@blabberlicious

Wow, I remember so many of these ads. Especially the Benson & Hedges ones. Dad smoked those from time to time. Great fun to see him under the table with his hands up the toaster too 😄

Wonderful work!

@blabberlicious OMG I had such a crush on her when I was young. Amazing to have pictures like that
