'On November 28th, 2012, Randall Munroe published an xkcd comic that was a calendar in which the size of each date was proportional to how often each date is referenced by its ordinal name (…) "In months other than September, the 11th is mentioned substantially less often than any other date. It's been that way since long before 9/11 and I have no idea why." After digging into the raw data, I believe I have figured out why.'

I dislike services where I do not really need to log in, but most providers insist that I do.

Prime example is podcasts. I used to simply download the .mp3 files, but when some podcasts limited that option, I found AntennaPod on F-droid. I cannot compare it to any other app, since I have never used any other app, but it is great. Most importantly, no need to have an account in order to listen.

The only downside is that I cannot give good ratings to some very worthy projects.

Blend files can execute malware

In case anyone needs another reminder not to click untrusted links on the internet : This week Superhive (formerly Blender Market) vendors were the target of some malicious attacks. Many (myself included) received a legitimate-sounding support ticket asking for help with their product, probably AI-generated to target them specifically. Attached to the ticket was a seemingly innocent blend file. A chair model. When opening the file, Blender asks if you want to execute “rig_ui.py”. Sure, w...

“Going to the cloud” can mean renting services/servers that you could get from anywhere. There’s little lock-in. The same four words “going to the cloud” might also mean locking your operations to a specific cloud provider, forever. This difference is vital, yet often ignored: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/beware-cloud-is-part-of-the-software/
'The cloud' is not just servers. 'Going to the cloud' could also mean locking into a forever sub-contractor - Bert Hubert's writings

The very brief version: “going to the cloud” can mean renting services/servers that you could get from anywhere. There’s little lock-in. The same four words “going to the cloud” might also mean locking your operations to a specific cloud provider, whose proprietary services will now be part of your business processes “forever”. Be specific which variant of cloud you are signing off on! I’m mostly out of the office but this post was already in the pipeline and I thought it might be useful to get it out.
