The Framework 16 laptop detects when it's booted partially assembled. It boots into a special mode to walk you through completing the assembly. The screen updates to reflect your progress and prompt the next step. This requires no tools to complete. Impressive! Watch:

So your connecting up electronic components while the laptop is powered on? 😲

@simonzerafa @frameworkcomputer Yes, you can see it's so dangerous with the Framework 16 to connect input modules that the OS walks me through it, as if I was plugging in a USB keyboard or mouse.
@simonzerafa @markstos @frameworkcomputer Yes, those components use USB connections so they can be connected and disconnected while the system is powered on.

@markstos @frameworkcomputer Wow! Very cool 😎

I read all the instructions and only did a few things wrong, but got it right, eventually, so I never got to see this cool feature.

Ever see the _Outer Limits_ episode by Harlan Ellison, "Demon with a Glass Hand"?

Guy mysteriously has amnesia and a glowing glass hand, missing fingers. The hand is a computer, which guides him in finding the lost fingers to reassemble it and regain his memories.

So... computers that help you assemble them were a fictional thing back in the 1960s. Now... well, they're not quite glass hands *yet*...

I've heard of "Framework". If I win a lottery, I'll look more closely.

@markstos @frameworkcomputer This is cool but also kinda least-surprise-violating, and might be frustrating if you're trying to debug an issue that's only visible once your OS is booted up. Is there a way to tell it to go on with normal boot?
@dalias @frameworkcomputer Interestingly, I believe without the mid-plate it boots directly into Linux. There’s a switch that detects that the midplate is present and only then does it help you finish the assembly. This is a pretty good balance.
@markstos @frameworkcomputer @thegcat as if I couldn’t love this hardware any more .. this is fucking brilliant!
@markstos @frameworkcomputer Wow. Simply wow. So smart. Good job #Framework .

@markstos that's soo cool! 😍. Another reason to buy a Framework Laptop as my next computer. They seem to care about details.

Nifty, but I'm already unsettled by vpro and to a lesser extent UEFI. My computer should not contain other secret computers.
@noodle @frameworkcomputer What’s your favorite laptop hardware?
@markstos @frameworkcomputer
My Compaq LTE Elite 486 laptop with the trackball and buttons built into the screen, and a physical brightness slider.

@noodle
💚 Physical brightness slider 💚

I'd love that!
