@eniko I'm a big fan of this Tetris the GrandMaster clone, but it does require a minor overclock to run smoothly
@eniko GBA:
- Advance Wars I and II
- The Castlevania games are pretty good
Snes:
- FFIV is one of my all time favorite
PSP:
- Half Minute Hero
- Patapon
@eniko I'm also interested in suggestions. Did not know about kotr! Thanks!
Any game style in particular you prefer?
@eniko I like to zone out at bus stops while playing Dr. Mario (Game Boy).
Bubble Bobble (Arcade) is always a banger.
Puzzle Bobble (aka Bust-a-Move) is the best! The Neo Geo Pocket Color version is my preference, best for precise control.
- The Settlers 2 (DOS)
- Star Control 2 (3DO, but the game was open sourced - http://sc2.sf.net - so it's running natively)
@eniko This one I'm playing exclusively on the SteamDeck (which I count as "handheld retro thingy"). It has touchpads.
Star Control 2, on the other hand, works perfectly fine with gamepad, that's why I've also been playing it a lot on my GCW Zero.
(My GCW Zero hasn't seen any use since I got the Steam Deck, even though it would be much more convenient to use due to its smaller size.)
@soulsource ah dang i was hoping you had some cheat code to make settlers 2 work well without mouse cause i love that one
alas, i don't have a steam deck :(
@eniko Sadly not. I only ever got it enjoyable on devices that either had a mouse, touchpad, or touchscreen.
The Settlers 1 would have built-in joystick support, so it might be usable with gamepad. However, last time I tried that was back in the 90s, with an actual flightstick, and while that did work, it wasn't what I would call enjoyable.
I second the Settlers 2 suggestion. I like that it has a somewhat usual style of gameplay.
I was disappointed that Settlers 3 became a more generic RTS game. The open source game Widelands is what Settlers *should have* become. So check that out if you like S2.

I wouldn't say I have a specific favourite game, but I can easily drop a decent number of games I like across multiple consoles and genres.
Star Fox 64
Super Aleste
GG Aleste 3
Streets of Rage 2
Quack Shot
Rogue Squadron
ChuChu Rocket (GBA)
Super Star Wars Trilogy
Monster Attack/Earth Defense Force
Valkyria Chronicles 2
I could probably go on all day...
@eniko does my PSP Go count
bc then Resident Evil 2
Here's a few of my favorites that haven't been mentioned yet:
Well known but bears repeating. My favorite game of all times, Super Metroid.
Zelda likes: Golvolius (Sega MS) and Brain Lord (SNES)
Side scrollers: Wonderboy 3 dragon's trap Sega MS, but remade for recent platformes) and Shinobi 3 (MegaDrive).
Jungle Strike (MegaDrive).
Shining in the darkness (MegaDrive)
Nice recommendations! And yes, the Metroids!
I thought the 2017 Dragon's Trap remake was really wonderful, and I was glad to play it before the original, so it might be worth playing that way around?
But maybe original first is good too, IDK.
Anyway yes deffo try the remake at some point if you haven't. It's a thing of beauty. Probs one of my top 10 games.
@eniko Tombi 2 for Playstation 1.
Not sure it holds up but I end up redoing it pretty consistently every couple of years
@eniko Yay Snow Bros!
I recently really enjoyed Wonder Boy in Monster World and am currently working through the campaign mode of Mario Tennis.
Nitro (Amiga) is on my to-replay list now that I don't have to play it on my cd32 anymore and can save game state etc. I'm overdue for a Speedball II league run too.
Basically all the 2D Zeldas are great if you haven't played them yet. For the first one though I'd recommend using a guide if you haven't beaten it before. Far too obtuse otherwise.
@eniko
H.E.R.O. is a surprisingly good Atari 2600 game
Shadowrun for Sega Genesis has a learning curve and a grindy start but gets good
Metal Gear Solid for Game Boy Color is... already active?! (It's good)
Bomb Jack is fun on just about any platform
Boogie Wings is typical Data East arcade madness
Sigma Star Saga for GBA is an interesting detour if you want more scrolling shooter in your RPG
