The next time a politician claims we can’t house the homeless, feed the starving or give medical care to the poor…. remember that they were able to build a concentration camp in 8 days.

We could provide for everyone if we wanted to, but instead we’re spending the money on fascist facilities and cutting taxes for the wealthy.

@broadwaybabyto Look what we managed in #Ottawa, #Canada. It's a start and a move in the right, humane direction:

The building will offer transitional housing for 140 single adults who are experiencing homelessness, with a focus on newcomers to Canada.

@alexblock
I kind of wish there were doors. It'd be token since the walls don't go all the way to the ceiling, but that extra feeling of security goes a long way, especially when most of these people are refugees.

That said, this is a HUGE step up from shelters.

@broadwaybabyto

@mayintoronto @broadwaybabyto The second photo shows at least there is a privacy curtain, although Im pretty sure the person in the photo was chosen to make it *look* like the walls arw higher than they actually are; however, I suspect they couldn't have floor to ceiling walls due to the need for air circulation given that they are repurposing an existing office space.

@alexblock Yes I'm aware of curtains, but have you ever felt safe and secure behind a curtain?

I understand the need for not-full walls in this relatively temporary set up, but doors would have gone a really long way here for the people they're serving.

@broadwaybabyto

@mayintoronto @broadwaybabyto I totally agree, physical, solid doors would be a much better choice. I wonder what the logic was for choosing curtains instead?

@alexblock @mayintoronto @broadwaybabyto

It's a deliberate planning choice to curtail illegal on-site activity.

@AwattoAnalog A bad decision then. People in need of support deserves real privacy and safety. Not curtains.

It's more likely an insurance/fire safety issue.
