I'm posting because I've had several events in my life ruined by god damn inkjet printers. Just buy this shit and be done with it if you ever need a printer. It works over WiFi you don't even need drivers.
Also I mostly print to it with my phone. I've had mine like 5 years the included ink is still fine and there's generics. Anyway that's my position.
@SwiftOnSecurity bought an earlier version in 2008, still works.
@SwiftOnSecurity I’m going to the print shop once every few years
@SwiftOnSecurity how much are the consumables?
@ret @SwiftOnSecurity Looked it up, out of curiosity. Genuine Brother toner is a tad pricy (local brick & mortar office supply store has the regular yield 1200-page 830 cartridge for $55 USD and the high yield 3000-page 830xl cartridge for $85)... but that's *half* the price of genuine HP toner. Third party compatible cartridges are super cheap online, looking like between $15-30 or so.
@baralheia yeah that’s very cheap compared to what I’m used to paying for HP stuff. Interesting. I do like higher-end HP printers though.
@ret I've got a slightly older color laser HP MFP that I really like... New enough to offer wifi and direct print from USB thumbdrives, but old enough that it's still got some of the legacy HP build quality and firmware that doesn't block third-party toner carts. I love mine... But if/when it finally breaks down, no way in hell am I getting any of their new junk. Hopefully that breakdown won't come for a while, but if it does, Brother is 100% the move.
@ret @baralheia Brother uses a separate drum unit as opposed to bundling it into the cartridge with the toner. Drum has a life of around 15,000 pages so for most people that's years of use. Kind of strange they still use a corona wire to generate the drum charge but for a consumer grade printer Brother is pretty good.

@SwiftOnSecurity We can watch live video from a rocket flying up into space from nearly anywhere in the world on our phones, but somehow, printers remain the most annoying and complicated problem in IT; taking a bunch of bytes and putting them on dead trees.

It's maddening.

@SwiftOnSecurity please can someone write a virus that makes infected phones seek out these printer's wifi and print one page of coronavirus 'cells'? That would be fun.
@SwiftOnSecurity I made the "conversion" about 6 months ago from an HP inkjet. It's always at the ready and fast.
@SwiftOnSecurity As a former copier tech, people who use inkjets deserve what they get.

@SwiftOnSecurity

The only scenario inkjets are OK is near continuous printing and that's super expensive.
Relying on liquid that's more expensive than blood to clean the nozzles is a tech showstopper.
