The chaotic urge to tell Linux evangelists to "Just install Windows" when they post even the smallest gripe about Linux...

@catsalad Why not "Just install OpenBSD" ?

#fanatics

@catsalad @bortzmeyer

May i tell you about our Lord and Saviour ReactOS?

@fzer0 @catsalad @bortzmeyer

Heretic!!!

The only Lord and Saviour is TempleOS, everybody knows that.

@bortzmeyer @catsalad
Because it's a reaction to them replying "just install Linux" when someone posts the smallest gripe about Windows
@leeloo @bortzmeyer @catsalad they usually use "just run linux", which is clever because it doesn't mention the GODDAMN INSTALL of the stuff.

@defred @bortzmeyer @catsalad
In my experience, installing is easy. It's all the stuff people suddenly realise they want after installing that cause problems.

But maybe jnstalling Linux has become harder? It was pretty easy in 1999.

@leeloo @bortzmeyer @catsalad of course it was a joke, I don't talk gentoo installs here :). But being a linux user since 2004, I could have rant about tons of "discomforts" new users will experience, but I give you that modern distro are incredibly easy to install, and with the right default packages it's almost like... A mac :)
@defred @leeloo @bortzmeyer @catsalad
Eye see what YOU did there, DeFred, and Eye'm tut-tutting over here!
@defred @leeloo @bortzmeyer @catsalad "just use that other free operating system. You know, the one that came free with your computer" (and then run like hell)
@leeloo @defred @bortzmeyer @catsalad all the stuff like webcam, wifi or printing other things than an A4.

@mariejulien @defred @bortzmeyer @catsalad
Are there still non-class compliant webcams? I know I had to compile an alpha driver back when I used a webcam, but that was when 640x480 was a good camera resolution. I thought they all switched to being class compliant years ago.

But no, I was thinking of their anti cheat games and all the s software they downloaded from suspicious websites 8 years ago and didn't mention until after wiping the system, but now is suddenly important.

@leeloo @mariejulien @defred @bortzmeyer @catsalad if your webcam does fancy stuff beyond "outputs an image" it is often controlled by proprietary software.

(Dear potential commenter: Yes I know cameractrls and use it myself; not what I mean)

@bortzmeyer @catsalad I have to use all three OSes every day for work.
I love and hate them all in equal measure. Got no time for religious affiliation.
@IsItBroke @bortzmeyer @catsalad Why don't you get a job planting flowers in the ground?
@khleedril @bortzmeyer @catsalad Nobody would hire me for my horticultural skills.

@bortzmeyer @catsalad

No, first you say:

Don't run a messy system assembled from a bunch of different sources, install FreeBSD, it's much more coherent.

Then you say:

Don't use a system designed for big servers on your personal machine, install OpenBSD, it's much simpler and easier to secure.

Then you say:

Don't use a system that's so paranoid in its security, install NetBSD, it's easier to configure.

And then you say:

Don't run a server OS for your desktop, install Haiku.

Bonus points if you make them install IllumOS in the middle.

@catsalad You're evil. I love it.

But also I would hate this lmao.

@catsalad "Just buy a Mac" somehow feels worse.
@Huubje @catsalad what's wrong with "just buy a Mac" Macs are closer to Linux than Windows
@Eat_Your_Paisleys @catsalad a lot of reasons. While on a technical level there are a lot of similarities, generally Apple and Linux fans couldn't be more different. The consumerist culture surrounding Apple is a part of it. The "buy" in my statement alludes to that.
@Huubje @catsalad I think you might be surprised at how many Mac users use Linux and how many former Linux users switched to Mac.
@catsalad but seriously? Windows??
@catsalad Even worse: "Just buy a new mac, not an issue for me"
@plaetzchen @catsalad And then to complete the encirclement, a Linux user that goes "Oh, you have a problem? Well, PRs welcome. You really need to be a better FOSS citizen."

@mandelhorn @plaetzchen @catsalad
Sending patches upstream is such a hassle.
Just keep your own downstream patches.

It's called free software, damnit, that means you're free to fix a bug when you see it, and use your fixed version forever, and nobody can stop you.

@catsalad Of course it runs NetBSD!

@catsalad i think every full time linux user must run windows 3 months a year just to see what they're missing out on.

maybe some of these are things they like missing out on, sure. but they should make that decision consciously

@kopper @catsalad ngl it took me a month of running windows to go back to my jankfest of choice, im not touching that for another few years
@halva @kopper Every Windows update makes it worse too!
@kopper It's painful going back to Windows when your daily driver is Linux/BSD/etc.

@kopper @catsalad

I think actually if the other way around happened we'd see a sizeable migration to desktop Linux.

@kopper @catsalad frankly I would rather drown myself in goblin piss. Or faeces. Or both. Windows has always been terrible although the ad for the first version from decades ago has always made me laugh out loud. Although writing TSRs was a lot of fun I must admit .. but totally not worth it.

@kopper @catsalad otoh: lately (past few years) Apple has been pushing out shitware. As a programmer if I did what they did I would be embarrassed. But they are proud and arrogant and delusional about it. I use Linux and macOS plus iOS. But Linux right now is just the console (server) as my other box is down. I really should fix it but I cba.

Still: it’s better than Windows. Even so if someone wants to use it .. but I wish MS would go to /dev/null.

@kopper @catsalad If only Windows wasn't extremely expensive and a bitch to install
@kopper @catsalad I don't know what that does or means.

@Sparkwave @kopper @catsalad Windows powershell equivalent of a "curl trustmebro.yolo | sudo bash" to perform an, erm, zero cost license activation against the current most popular provider of those.

(although... shouldn't that be iwr ... | iex ?)

@kopper @catsalad I have to run Windows for work, so I am very much aware of the pain I'm freed from when switching to my own computer.
@kopper @catsalad To be that guy I have a Linux machine at home and a Window's laptop for work everyday and I've got more friction using Windows than Linux

@kopper @catsalad trying to do C++ development on Windows 7 is an entire story I have

Like, if anything on Windows "Just Works" I'm convinced it's in spite of Microsoft's best efforts, not because of them

@bdf2121cc3334b35b6ecda66e471 @catsalad ok but people do more than programming on they computers
@kopper @catsalad that doesn't contradict anything I said
@kopper @catsalad I work in onsite IT support so I'm constantly reminded why I don't want it on my private hardware while I'm having fun with this broken mess (domain controlled environment DOUBLES the fun)
@catsalad I have lived with Linux longer than I did my parents, and the mutual disappointment is often greater too.
@catsalad look, some simple WMI classes fix all this that you're complaining about, I thought y'all could dig into the details of a system!

Taking this seriously as one shouldn't,

The overenthusiasm is too high but windows acts with malace towards the user. It's absolutely possible to take out the trash and leave a nice system and modify that new system to be what you want. Many power users including myself have done so.

But windows will always either undo what has been done, or claim you aren't using windows anymore and so you don't get updates.

If you use a Macbook then it does have a excessive self-defense, but it treats you nicely. It says you're important.

If you use Linux, it's braindead until you give it a brain, empty of love until you give it a heart, etc. But once you do, it is an extension of the self that moves how you do.

We are overexcited to recommend Linux tho. Please keep us at bay. I was way too eager to do a Linux rant there.

@catsalad "here's how I do that on my ipad with no problems..."

@catsalad i could probably rewrite whichever thing is giving me trouble from scratch in the time it usually takes to install windows. /j

But whining is faster than both options!

@catsalad i see what you did there 🤣
@catsalad thats just an average tiktok comment section
