May i tell you about our Lord and Saviour ReactOS?
@defred @bortzmeyer @catsalad
In my experience, installing is easy. It's all the stuff people suddenly realise they want after installing that cause problems.
But maybe jnstalling Linux has become harder? It was pretty easy in 1999.

Are there still non-class compliant webcams? I know I had to compile an alpha driver back when I used a webcam, but that was when 640x480 was a good camera resolution. I thought they all switched to being class compliant years ago.
But no, I was thinking of their anti cheat games and all the s software they downloaded from suspicious websites 8 years ago and didn't mention until after wiping the system, but now is suddenly important.
@leeloo @mariejulien @defred @bortzmeyer @catsalad if your webcam does fancy stuff beyond "outputs an image" it is often controlled by proprietary software.
(Dear potential commenter: Yes I know cameractrls and use it myself; not what I mean)
No, first you say:
Don't run a messy system assembled from a bunch of different sources, install FreeBSD, it's much more coherent.
Then you say:
Don't use a system designed for big servers on your personal machine, install OpenBSD, it's much simpler and easier to secure.
Then you say:
Don't use a system that's so paranoid in its security, install NetBSD, it's easier to configure.
And then you say:
Don't run a server OS for your desktop, install Haiku.
Bonus points if you make them install IllumOS in the middle.
@catsalad You're evil. I love it.
But also I would hate this lmao.
@mandelhorn @plaetzchen @catsalad
Sending patches upstream is such a hassle.
Just keep your own downstream patches.
It's called free software, damnit, that means you're free to fix a bug when you see it, and use your fixed version forever, and nobody can stop you.
@catsalad i think every full time linux user must run windows 3 months a year just to see what they're missing out on.
maybe some of these are things they like missing out on, sure. but they should make that decision consciously
@kopper @catsalad otoh: lately (past few years) Apple has been pushing out shitware. As a programmer if I did what they did I would be embarrassed. But they are proud and arrogant and delusional about it. I use Linux and macOS plus iOS. But Linux right now is just the console (server) as my other box is down. I really should fix it but I cba.
Still: it’s better than Windows. Even so if someone wants to use it .. but I wish MS would go to /dev/null.
@Sparkwave @kopper @catsalad Windows powershell equivalent of a "curl trustmebro.yolo | sudo bash" to perform an, erm, zero cost license activation against the current most popular provider of those.
(although... shouldn't that be iwr ... | iex ?)
Taking this seriously as one shouldn't,
The overenthusiasm is too high but windows acts with malace towards the user. It's absolutely possible to take out the trash and leave a nice system and modify that new system to be what you want. Many power users including myself have done so.
But windows will always either undo what has been done, or claim you aren't using windows anymore and so you don't get updates.
If you use a Macbook then it does have a excessive self-defense, but it treats you nicely. It says you're important.
If you use Linux, it's braindead until you give it a brain, empty of love until you give it a heart, etc. But once you do, it is an extension of the self that moves how you do.
We are overexcited to recommend Linux tho. Please keep us at bay. I was way too eager to do a Linux rant there.
@catsalad i could probably rewrite whichever thing is giving me trouble from scratch in the time it usually takes to install windows. /j
But whining is faster than both options!
