Actually, it wasn't a new thing even then, but one that it made heavy usage where basically instead of actually designing some interior areas at all they'd just use a wall with a door texture. Can't be opened because it's not even a locked door, just a solid wall...
Although nothing upsets me more than games using invisible walls to pen a player in. That's just crap design.

And as long as it's marking, like, edge of play area, rather than being an obstacle you have to get past in the stupidest way possible...
