I start the day trying to be a good person, but then someone pulls out in front of me, doing 10 mph below the speed limit. So I'll try again tomorrow.
@kibcol1049 omg same β€” three times in the few miles to get groceries. Three. Times. Zero on the way back, so I killed no one.
@cascheranno Well done, have a gold star on me. πŸ˜‚

@cascheranno @kibcol1049 In my fairly recent youth, I rode motorbikes for around 20 years. In those days, a Volvo was your enemy as they drove like idiots, didn't look, stop, wait etc.

These days, Volvo are fine, but German car drivers seem to have taken over the idiocy. A friend of ours always shouts "Don't block the road when you crash!" As they fly past in all the wrong places!

@NormanDunbar @cascheranno @kibcol1049
Same ~20 years & not riding in traffic on 2 wheels anymore.
@stevewfolds @NormanDunbar @cascheranno 30 years of scraping bodies up after traffic collisions have led me to the conclusion you always come off worse on 2 wheels! ☹️😱
@kibcol1049 @NormanDunbar @cascheranno I managed to walk away with broken bones from falls on different motorcycles & quit in 1986.
@stevewfolds @NormanDunbar @cascheranno Good plan. I've seen too many lives ruined.
@kibcol1049 @stevewfolds @NormanDunbar @cascheranno I walked away from my motorcycle when I moved from the city to the country where I had horses. Literally parked the bike and left it. (Sold the bike 20 years later.)

@stevewfolds
I was lucky or skilled. Maybe both. I never had an accident on my bikes.

I started with a TL125 in 1977, a 250 Super Dream, CX500, a CBR600 which got nicked along with the lock and alarm, and a VFR750, which I traded in for a wife in 1997!

@kibcol1049 @cascheranno

@NormanDunbar @stevewfolds @cascheranno You were careful that helps, but if cars collide, they have safety features and are designed to absorb impacts. Sadly not so with bikes. ☹️
@kibcol1049 @NormanDunbar @cascheranno
I loved going fast on/in everything and learned how fragile we are when decelerating quickly.
Much gratitude to the engineer at Volvo who invented 3-point seatbelts and the company for not patenting it.

@stevewfolds
Very true, can you imagine a big company doing something like that these days?

@kibcol1049 @cascheranno

I asked a motorcyclist friend : do you know know any motorcyclists who haven't had at least one near death incident.

Long pause.

No.

@Ultraverified

@BenAveling

I work with people who ride. Fatalism is part of the package.

I know people who have died, as well. I think the surviving spouses and kids know my response is not meant in a humorous or disrespectful way.

It's just the truth.

@Ultraverified @BenAveling Met a
Police chief who died being hit by a deer, no helmet*. Had a neighbor with a TBI from a deer jumping on him as well, no helmet and 3 girls in grade school.

Sandy police chief killed in motorcycle crash

@Ultraverified @BenAveling @stevewfolds @kibcol1049 @NormanDunbar @cascheranno I mean, you *can*, but they tend not to give useful answers.
@beemoh @Ultraverified @BenAveling @stevewfolds @NormanDunbar @cascheranno The best people to ask are the families robbed of their child, sibling, parent or friend. Either completely or with a massive life change. I've broken that shocking news to quite a few. It's never easy. Often, those also involved but in a car, etc, walked away with hardly a scratch. 😟
@kibcol1049 @beemoh @Ultraverified @BenAveling @NormanDunbar @cascheranno Friends were bitching about cuts on their faces when the airbags went off in their Subaru. I didn’t try to explain the alternatives.

@stevewfolds
They were lucky. Some people get their hands "degloved" when their airbags go off!

I never had "gravel rash" on my bikes, due to not falling off, but I've seen it in others, thoroughly unrecommended!

@kibcol1049 @beemoh @Ultraverified @BenAveling @cascheranno

@NormanDunbar @kibcol1049 @cascheranno I’ve fallen off of most everything, especially w/wheels. Most fun was low powered vehicles sliding at low speeds on slippery surfaces.
@NormanDunbar @kibcol1049 @cascheranno Takes the same basic skills to go 30 mph on a dirt road with no shocks in a $500 pickup truck as is does to drive on a racetrack. You have to be aware of the weight on each tire.

@kibcol1049
Agreed. I was taught defensive driving plus, I worked in a bike shop (Honda) and taught many a customer how to ride. As far as I'm aware, at least while I still worked on bikes, I never lost a customer!

Was it me or was everyone just lucky? Who knows.
