I'm serious about this, I see way too many brilliant people losing their jobs right now, and I've been out of work for like two years and it doesn't look like that's going to change any time soon. I want to keep my skills sharp, and the only way for me to stay motivated is to have people to keep me accountable. We can keep the standups brief and self-focused, and have breakout rooms for people who want to team up to work on projects. Low expectations, I just want to build things again!

And if a voice/video call sounds too intense, maybe we could just do it here in toots or something? I don't want to force it or try to be in control of anything. I just have a lot of free time and it seems like some of y'all might too, and I think we could collaborate. Let's hear ideas!

I'm getting some feedback that voice/video might be a tough for some people, and scheduling will probably be too much of a challenge since we're all over the world.

One option is a Signal group chat which a lot of people here probably already have.

Another is a Matrix/Element chatroom, which is a kind of decentralized Discord/Slack.

I've already set up the later so sign up and connect if you can and let's see if it works.

@schizanon I've been thinking about how tech people could help local independent businesses, artists, flea market vendors, nonprofits, etc. Usually they need a ton of help on the tech side. So many bad websites and incomplete digital presences.

Are you looking to build a single thing together, or to work together to motivate each other to build our own separate things? If one single thing… like what?

I’m partially disabled, which makes full-time work impossible, but I have the spoons for full enthusiasm part of the time. I just never know exactly when it’ll be. Frustrating but handy for asynchronous support.

@Carolee I want us all to check in with our personal goals and progress first of all, and then help each other with the bits each other need help with. If those projects turn in to separate things then that'd be great!

Async seems to be the way to go, and I think we should try Matrix because it lets me create rooms where we can keep async convos focused on certain topics without overloading a big group chat.

@schizanon Saw this a couple days ago and meant to respond but as usual forgot. I've been out of work for a year and a half now, despondent as hell lately, and have been wondering how I'd actually do if I got back into the workforce: who am I, what have I forgotten, am I still sharp and potentially still a commercially productive member of society? I dunno if I'd help "build" something per se, but maybe re-build skills? Talking might be good. I might join your server.
