No one expected that a political newcomer, let alone a socialist Muslim immigrant, could knock off a political heavyweight like Andrew Cuomo. But that’s exactly what Zohran Mamdani did yesterday in the NYC Democratic mayoral primary, and it’s sending shockwaves through the political establishment. My write-up on the upset in today’s piece, link in the replies.
A Seismic Election in NYC

Newcomer Zohran Mamdani pulled off the unthinkable and redrew the political map entirely in New York’s Democratic mayoral primary yesterday.

The Status Kuo
@jaykuo Cuomo didn't get spanked hard enough. 😞
@jaykuo Maybe we could try a coalition government everywhere, made up of people who are not capitalist Christian nationalist racist white guys, ya know, just as a treat.
@jaykuo A democratic socialist, which is what I gather Mamdami is, is not exactly the same as a socialist. Note that I was very happy that he won.
@mweston @jaykuo well, it's a start. Hopefully
@jaykuo
The broken US voting system in a nutshell? Here it is: "Those ads sought to portray Mamdani as antisemitic..."
@jaykuo No one inside the Democratic establishment, maybe. Which is an indictment of them, not of us or of this result.

@jaykuo
He ran a near perfect campaign and did what Dems need to do to win: get out into the neighborhoods and listen to people - not preach at them.
The only sure way to get around broligarch social media and cable is to interact with voters one to one. Dumping a ton of cash on TV and social media ads did not work for Cuomo. We need to learn from this election campaign. Precinct work isn't rocket science.

@jaykuo
It really shouldn't be that big a surprise. Cuomo is not respected in New York. All he had going for him was name recognition.
@jaykuo He won the same way Trump won in 2016. Voters didn't want the rehashed candidate. They wanted change regardless of the politics of the candidate. He is different and offers something new. It remains to be seen if he is the mayor of change or not.
