I can't get over this sentence no matter how often I read it.

"Women showed no effects when told they were masculine; however, men given feedback suggesting they were feminine expressed more support for war, homophobic attitudes, and interest in purchasing an SUV."

Men are just not good leaders because they're too emotional and WHAT I'LL HAVE YOU KNOW I HAVE FOUR SUVs SIR FOUR OF THEM
"In this way, men may inadvertently reveal feelings of threat by behaving in a more extremely masculine way than they otherwise would. @jmcrookston Years ago, I tried figuring men out by modeling them as scared little boys trying to hide their vulnerabilities under a facade of bravado and performed masculinity. That technique has yet to steer me wrong.

@Gorfram @jmcrookston I’m a cishet man who has intimate, extensive and long term experience working and living with other men, and I can guarantee you this model will serve you well.

Paternalism sucks for everyone.

@avuko @Gorfram @jmcrookston You're not American, right? I was wondering about that.

@martinvermeer @Gorfram @jmcrookston not an American, but as far as I can tell this is the problem in every western culture. Probably in every patriarchy.

I guess matriarchal societies would have very similar problems, but I admit I’m curious how those would play out.

@Gorfram @jmcrookston OMG YES! Back in my 20s when I would date men and they would exhibit horrible behavior I would have to picture them as little boys to get over the ick and “forgive and forget”. Kind of like a “forgive them because they know not what they do, this little temper tantrum is how they express feelings!” Ew.

And it makes me mad that I thought I had to do that. But I am Gen X and a lot of us were told that if we weren’t married or pumping out babies there was something wrong with us. And also because rent became unaffordable after 9/11 so I was dating to find someone to split rent with.
