My 14 year old has tried to 'introduce' me today to 3 bands........

1)Air πŸ™„
2)The Stranglers πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„
3)METALLICA?!?! πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„

I let her playlist run whilst she went to the shops and I haven't hit skip once yet. She apparently has exactly the same musical taste as I did at 14. James, Supergrass, Smashing Pumpkins, Stranglers, Cure....

I wonder if it's genetic?

@TheBreadmonkey
My kids recently had a brief infatuation with MC Hammer. Fascinating to watch.

@the_etrain

Addams Family Groove was a banger

@TheBreadmonkey My 20 yr old is introducing me to Prince.

@CMDoran

I'm sorry, Pronce? Never heard of it.

@TheBreadmonkey I think I saw an article recently about sounds heard by foetuses having lasting effects in later life. Perhaps it's also a cultural thing.

(This theory would suggest that I should be a fan of The Ratpack, or C19th opera. I am not.) πŸ˜‰

@RussCheshire @TheBreadmonkey Maybe the sound was so scarring, you decided from a young age to hate it.
@RussCheshire @TheBreadmonkey I should play my son lots of Stevie Wonder and see how he reacts
@RussCheshire @TheBreadmonkey my granddaughter, 15, likes Laufey, who could very nearly come from the 50s. She has a great voice though not my taste
@RussCheshire @TheBreadmonkey
I don't understand why my son isn't a big fan of NOFX
@RussCheshire @TheBreadmonkey
I did play quite a lot of classical music at the time , although his first gig, in gestation, was Propagandhi.

@TheBreadmonkey When I was growing up and well into adulthood, I had an intense relationship with the music of the Beatles, the Doors, Led Zepplin, The Mamas and the Papas, ABBA, all bands that were popular before I started forming long-term memories.

I'm sure my parents had the same reaction to my musical inclinations at the time too :D

(If this were happening to me, I'd drop in a sampling of Soundgarden's catalog just to see what happens)

@TheBreadmonkey I think it’s because the three or four radio station owners left on earth are deathly allergic to playing anything that isn’t *already* a mainstream commercial success.

@TheBreadmonkey

Congrats, you have succeeded at parenting.

@TheBreadmonkey You're lucky! Didn't happen with my teen. At least, not yet. I'm working on it.
@TheBreadmonkey supergrass were the answer to a pub quiz question last time I went to the quiz and I was the only one to get it. Made me a bit sad.

@TheBreadmonkey

My son (22) has eclectic musical taste but it includes David Bowie and Leonard Cohen.

@TheBreadmonkey I'm surprised that you haven't heard of them.
@TheBreadmonkey if you like them there is a little band that you might like called Bananarama
@TheBreadmonkey trash music! I hope you berated them and introduced them to proper music like cannibal corpse

@bazkie

That's evolution. You level up to that.

@TheBreadmonkey Aw, it’s quite sweet when that happens.
@TheBreadmonkey Introduce you to Metallica! Kid, I’ve been going to their gigs for *30 years* 😁🀘

@TheBreadmonkey Pop culture recycling has given my 15yo an uncanny familiarity of the music from when I was her age in the 80s… but for the past couple of years she has been very fond of… Rammstein.

I mean kudos, no notes, but where did that come from?!? Her other persistent favorites are either 8-bit-sounding video game themes or verge on β€œbardcore.”

@TheBreadmonkey πŸ˜‚ Introduce him to Mozart, Beethoven, and Schumann.

@TheBreadmonkey

This reminds me that every year from 1980 until about 1998, a teenager would mention at a gathering (or post on BBS) that they found an album in their parent's collection they couldn't believe their parents listened to, much less have. That was "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd at Ivor Wynne: Hamilton’s wildest concert turns 50

Pink Floyd was the biggest concert ever in Hamilton, and included the band's signature special effects included a mock flaming jet crashing into the stage

@TheBreadmonkey I tried to have a goth phase when I was a kid, got into grunge and growly rock and roll, Mom had a great time.

Tried to rebel, got into pop and techno.

Guess what my dad loves???
