"Internet is becoming more and more centralized in the hands of a few evil tech companies. Our project aims to change that! Join our discord and…"

No, this is not a real quote. But we all know it totally could have been.
@rysiek Could be worse. It could call for joining a private Facebook group. 😉
Discord Begins Testing Facial Scans for Age Verification

Some countries have passed strict new laws dictating youth access to digital platforms.

Gizmodo
@rysiek @gedvondur I am on some intuitive level pretty sure it isn't.
@rysiek @gedvondur oh that totally won't backfire and happen to mis-age certain groups and force them to upload ID which discord promises not to keep stored, until the next data breach...
@rysiek @gedvondur Have a look at discord's ownership and who owns 38%.
@rysiek "... follow us on Facebook, download the App from Google Play, see our website on AWS behind Cloudflare, checkout our source code on Microsoft GitHub, and follow our YouTube channel!"

@AstaMcCarthy @rysiek subscribe to our newsletter on monkeysomething or freshmail, e-mail us on our Google Workspace hosted e-mail. What about donate to us? Any evil tech company monopolised that?

We are preparing to write an article that NGOs should stay independent - not only from governments but also in terms of tech infrastructure, whys & hows included. Inspirations welcome!

@panoptykon @AstaMcCarthy @rysiek Therefore, you’re up against a formidable player. Microsoft, operating under the umbrella of TechSoup, is steering NGOs toward its cloud-dependent services and LLM-driven workflows.
@dopelover @AstaMcCarthy @rysiek True. We've noticed that NGOs in Poland used to rely on Google for Non-Profits and MS offline products, but more and more are migrating to MS cloud-dependent services. Well, nobody promised it will be easy! Anyway, we can show a way for those who aren't comfortable with such choices
@AstaMcCarthy @rysiek Well at least in that case you wouldn't be completely bound to only one of the tech megacorps.
@rysiek thanks for coming to my TED talk
@rysiek it's like raiiiiiin on your wedding day 🎶

@rysiek Correction... 📢

"Join our Fediverse server on..."

@stux
… threads.net :D

@rysiek

@wariat well @stux did say Fediverse, and I am going to be adamant that threads-dot-net do not fit the definition of Fediverse even if it federates with some instances. Just as Gab does not fit that definition even though it supports ActivityPub.

Fediverse is not defined by a protocol, but by a shared set of ideas and values. Nothing that is controlled by Meta can be a part of it, regardless of what technical features it happens to implement.

@rysiek
For you doesn't fit, for me doesn't fit, but for corporate marketers… ;-)

@stux

@wariat @stux why would I care about what corporate marketers have to say? That's what adblockers are for.
@rysiek @wariat We have blocked threads so we won't be bothered by their stuff anyways 😆
@rysiek which is above a row of social media icons for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram…
@rysiek given how many software projects use discord for their documentation, imagine how awful a discord-based alternative to Wikipedia would be.
@rysiek it is sad to see that there is no real Discord alternative (yet).
Not something like Matrix, the support for everything beyond chat in that is horrible... But something that tries to mimic the experience one has with Discord.

@hannah @rysiek Revolt is pretty good. Sure, it's not federated (yet), but hosting a single instance with just your community server isn't an unreasonable use case.

I think the MVP of "federation" for revolt would be federated identity management, so you at least wouldn't need to log into each and every server someone operates just to chat there. Then the client could connect to all the servers and make it seem seamless, same as IRC clients have managed multiple remote servers since forever.

@rysiek "Join our Discord!"

Then the Discord has just one channel with one pinned post - "Join our Zulip!"

@rysiek Since discord demands i verify by SMS to join them, thats thats the step where i stop
@rysiek @donelias ... And follow us on X or Instagram.
@rysiek To be fair, we lost that fight while clinging to "why you need discord when you have IRC?" and now matrix is hardly an option. Gonna take a while for another self-hosted alternative to gain momentum.
@t_var_s it does largely depend on us though. If we choose to use Discord for our projects, and if we choose to be on Discord, we are supporting Discord. It's that simple.
