Absolutely appalling to see #Pride flags being taken down in response to Cornerstone Book's homophobia in #PrideMonth in #Matlock #Derbyshire #UK

Could anyone help explain to the bookshop ( www.cornerstonebooks.co.uk/ ) why this is problematic in any way that may be effective to make them listen or effect their business?

Also, making views known to the local council, who will be discussing this incident at their council meeting on 21 July may help. Contact townclerk@matlock.gov.uk and tell them you won't visit homophobic Matlock

John Whitby MP - Derbyshire Dales Constituency - Derbyshire Dales Constituency Labour Party

Derbyshire Dales Constituency Labour Party

@StingrayBadger Thought I would share the email I've got sat waiting to send to the Town Clerk and John Whitby MP:

Good morning

With horror this morning, I was reading the news and read that Matlock Town Council has removed the Pride flag from the high street [1] following a homophobic complaint from a local business. Due to this, I have decided to remove Matlock from my tourist itinerary this year.

Pride, and communities showing solidarity with LGBTQ+ people, is incredibly important, moreso given recent and sustained attacks against the community. By removing the flag, the town council has sent the clear message that members of the LGBTQ+ community are not welcome in Matlock including its own residents.

@StingrayBadger

The nonsense reasoning from Judy Crook of Cornerstone Christian Bookshop, as quoted, is “we’re not happy with the gay rights situation”. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that "gay rights" are not gay rights; they are human rights.

Flying a Pride flag during LGBTQ+ Pride month is a simple, powerful and visible way of showing solidarity with a minority under sustained attack from many directions.

Further nonsense was quoted from Dan Price (Reform UK Ltd), saying the UK was a “Christian country” [1] which is anything but the case. The Office of National Statistics reported that "less than half of the population (46.2%) described themselves as “Christian” [2] on the 2021 Census. Both the quoted people from the article, who claim to be Christian, are clearly not following or acting in line with the teachings of Christ, which in mind negates their claim to be Christian

@StingrayBadger

While I will not be reconsidering my boycott of Matlock this year as the removal of the Pride flag should never have happened, please return the flag to its place on the high street.

I look forward to a positive resolution that respects the wider diverse community, both in Matlock and the UK.

Yours
Ollie

@StingrayBadger What was the name of the bookshop... Oh yeah Cornerstone books... Spread the word to avoid it...
@StingrayBadger
Statue of Baphomet across the road from the bookshop?
@StingrayBadger It's also worth noting that the bookshop holds meetings in property owned by Matlock Town Council, you might talk to them and ask if they support bigotry?

@SamanthaJaneSmith

Well found: could you contact the council too? The more responses they get the better

@StingrayBadger I don't live in the UK so I think it not very useful. I would spread the word on social media and see if the Town council have any sites...
@StingrayBadger The council are the ones who need talking to - they may well have broken the law by doing the bidding of those bigots

@RavenLuni

Thanks. Any idea which law?

@StingrayBadger Not specifically but pretty sure there are anti discrimination laws in place for this kinf od thing.
@StingrayBadger Totally appalled. Why should 'a Christian' have control. Government (local or otherwise) should be secular, and inclusive.
@StingrayBadger Seems to me the council is at fault here. The book owner is entitled to their opinion, but the council should not have been guided by it.
@StingrayBadger I am 'not happy with the freedom of religion situation'.
@StingrayBadger got a link to an actual (non-paywalled) article, please?
@StingrayBadger ah, found one!

The bookshop didn't want to be associated with anything "political", which is an excuse that really gets my goat for two reasons:

1) Everything is political. The choice to openly share your faith is inherently political. The very fact we have a reasonable standard of literacy is because of political choices to create an education system - initially pushed by Christians creating Sunday Schools.

2) If you don't show your support for something, you leave space for those who are against it. If you actively distance yourself from support, you actively encourage those against it.

@jetlagjen @StingrayBadger The book shop is stupid. They have engaged in a political act. Bu I repeat: the fault is with the Council who should not have bowed to their bigoted desire.
@jetlagjen @StingrayBadger Unfortunately the link is cookie-crippled or paywalled.

@StingrayBadger in a joint statement, the trustees said: “Cornerstone Christian Bookshop is an inclusive organisation that wants to share the Christian faith with everyone. All are welcome to our bookshop, regardless of their sexuality.
Except you dirty gays and trannies, you’ll all burn in hell.

My father in law is a devout Christian, aged 83, and has ZERO issue accepting his transgender granddaughter. Plain old fashioned bigotry.

@StingrayBadger Apparently there are 12 replies, but I can't see them.
