I ended up switching my iPad back to full screen mode. The new multi window mode is a bit beta fiddly but overall fine, just not something I have any use for on an iPad. Switching between full screen apps is really all I need.
@paul it's even more fiddly, but I think Stage Manager + multi-window is the way to go. You can basically set up Spaces for common use-cases (e.g., Bluesky + Ivory (+ Threads if you hate yourself)). Of course lots of apps still make sense in full-screen and you can keep them saved that way.
@jwolman @paul yeah, I’m finding that combo pretty great on my 11” m4 pro (with “more space” in display zoom). But the multitasking is awful on a mini.
@paul Tried to use it, but on a 11" iPad Air, it's way too cramped. If I upgrade to a 13" next year, I might give it another shot.
@paul I disabled the whole iPad multi tasking some years ago.
My current one is stuck at iOS 17 an I have no intention of buying a new one anytime soon.
@paul yeah, i’m finding the old split screen/floating window more useful for the kind of multitasking one does while doing something else, like replying to a text or email while reading. Windows not necessary.

@paul Same, except when I want to make sure stuff is continuing to happen in another app while I do something else, because I can't trust the OS to not kill it in the background.

Connecting an iPad to a 4k monitor though is something else. I'm enjoying windowing with that, and did so even with Stage Manager before.

@paul Ditto. Much like Stage Manager, it's probably great for other folk, but. .. I just don't get it!!!!
@paul I really hope they retain the Full Screen split screen without needing all of the window baggage. 2 apps side by side without wasting space on close buttons and a window border.
@paul same... I guess on a 13" iPad connected to an external screen, a mouse and keyboard... but then I have an MBP for that. It is pretty well implemented, though.

@paul Is it possible to switch through control center?

I think I want classic fullscreen mode 95% of the time. But it would be nice to be able to switch easily to windowed mode and back fast.

@paul I generally found that I agree, but small apps like calculator do look better to me in window mode.
@sappharad I could see that but I just use an iPhone for stuff like that.
@paul I currently use it as full screen only (not shocking). I suspect that having windowing will make certain kinds of apps be made and be used more. I hope. I love using my iPad and don’t need it to take more roles, but I’m open to it.

@paul sometimes I need to drag some files and now it’s super fiddly to switch to multi window mode, then the simple snap is behind the tap on the controls and then!the long press (or dancing with window flicking from the center of the screen to the side)

Why can’t we have old simple snapping in full screen mode?

@paul install switcher from macos 3 or so...
@paul If I were Craig Federighi reading this post and the replies, my eyes would be rolling out the back of my head! LOL
@paul is there a clamshell mode when attached to an external monitor?
@paul It’s very buggy. But I like that split view/slide over keyboard shortcuts still mostly work. Stage manager did not have any way to manage windows using keyboard (except for fullscreen and minimize). I can easily press globe + control then left or right for splitscreen. Less buggy window management if you need to focus quickly
