Artificial intelligence: Disney and Universal sue Midjourney over copyright

The Hollywood studios allege Midjourney's image generator is a "bottomless pit of plagiarism".

@nixCraft So the line is drawn. The AI peddlers can steal from artists but not from corporations that use art for profit. Sounds like the american way.

@useravoiding
Well this is the logic of capitalism.

Capitalist steals* from you – profits.

You steal** from the capitalist – losses and crimes

* Most prominent example would be value from labour, as per Labour Theory of Value.
** Includes making copies, toilet paper, and not being 110%+ efficient at work.

@nixCraft

@nixCraft My first instinct was the Kong v. Godzilla "Let Them Fight" meme, but I think more appropriate in this case is the Aliens v. Predator "Whoever Wins, We Lose" meme instead.

I'm no fan of AI, but Disney is not the friend of anyone creating copyrightable works.

@nixCraft I wonder if Google’s Veo also can generate Universal and Disney characters and would they dare suing Google then.
@nixCraft god I hope this somehow destroys all of them

@nixCraft It is somewhat strategic. Go after the weaker defendant to get precedent. Then probably go after the deep pockets, like Microsoft.

It's the flip side for individual artists - not enough money to make a suit viable against a better paid legal team.

The scales of justice have always been tipped by wealth.
