You know how politicians often end up in high paying roles at private companies after they leave politics?

Sadly that also does happen in Iceland.

However the nation's previous President decided that he would rather go and work as a national park ranger this summer (during winter time he is a professor of history at the national university).

This just feels too wholesome not to share.

@hth Áfram Ísland! Woohoo!
@hth A few years ago, I watched a movie from Iceland at BFI Flare (London’s LGBTQ film festival), and after the screening, there was a Q&A with the director. It was revealed that the guy who directed the movie was also the goalkeeper of the Icelandic football team. 🤷‍♂️
@hth He probably doesn't need a security detail, either.

@hth

This is screaming to become a movie or TV series… something. Would be surprised if no producers have already come out to Iceland offering to buy life rights to the story…

@brianstorms @hth Just mention to Hollywood that there are volcanoes.

@hth

Reminds me of the late President Jimmy Carter, who did all that work with Habitat For Humanity after he left office (along with many, many other good works).

Nordic countries seem to have a better ‘social conscience’ than other Europeans but the right wing movement in Sweden is depressing.
I called in frequently on oil tankers to them all in the 70’s and thoroughly enjoyed it. High taxes but excellent services.

@hth True, but we cannot compare Iceland, which has the population of a small European city to the president of countries with tens or hundreds of million people.

It's fair to compare him to the major of a medium-sized city.

@hth yeah, tho granted #Iceland is small: My election district has more inhabitants that the entire nation and my hometown more than Reykyavik, so the people there have a short walk to those in power...

@hth
It's also the (only?) country that did this

(Can't believe I'm promoting Yglesias, but...)

Iceland put bankers in jail rather than bailing them out — and it worked

The former president works a summer job as a park ranger - RÚV.is

The former president of Iceland is working as a park ranger this summer and says that the presidency prepared him well for the job. The director of Þingvellir says that the former president is an excellent fit for the job.

@hth That's amazing! The only thing even close to that in the US is Jimmy Carter dedicating most of the rest of his life to building houses with Habitat for Humanity.

@hth A Dutch former public prosecutor and then Justice Minister became a bus driver after his political career.

It was a passion he had had for a long time and he finally had the time for it after leaving politics.

@lennardvanotterloo @hth This far right politician however sucked ass. His push/lobby to reform the gambling law worked for the gambling industry. Not for the victims of/and gambling addicts.

@lennardvanotterloo I see this propaganda shot is doing its work.

Teeven was an antidemocratic politician who demolished the funds for social lawyers and made a corrupt deal with a criminal, and did a part-time job of driving a bus for a few months while also being a lobbyist and looking for a new influential job.

That doesn't seem wholesome to me.

@hth

@hth he genuinely seems like a nice guy. Sat next to me in the hot tub at Nauthólsvík once.
@hth We should all live like Iceland and the world would truly be a better place.

@hth Now *that’s* a healthy reaction to a career in politics: how far from the nearest ther human can I get? Let’s find out.

@hth

👀 @breadandcircuses if you didn't see this yet - a bit of positive news.

@hth that is so messed up! He is going to ruin the reputation of public figures everywhere.
