China steps in for the US... This is humiliating....

China to donate $500 million to WHO, stepping into gap left by U.S.

Beijing will replace the United States as the organization’s top state donor, expanding its influence as the U.S. retreats from international cooperation.

The Washington Post

@jeffjarvis And soon you will start to see Chinese military bases all around the world..

How do you think the US got those military bases to begin with, other than the host countries being thankful for something?

@gimulnautti Honestly, good for them. The US is doing what Donald's dad SHOULD have done. Pulling out of everything. The void is getting filled, and it's no longer up to us to say what's acceptable and what isn't. The world will keep going, even if we don't

@gimulnautti @jeffjarvis No, that’s the mindset of a settler-colonial empire, which China is not.

The US got those military bases by having lots of aircraft carriers, gunships, nuclear subs, and the promise that they won’t use them on you if you let them take a piece of your land for their military to use.

@enoch_exe_inc @gimulnautti @jeffjarvis Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu told Newsweek: "The Chinese people are living, working and traveling in many parts of the world. Cargo ships with Chinese goods sail along almost all major international waterways. These fully justify China's moves to build up its defense capability to protect its legitimate interests overseas and promote regional and international peace."
@alper @enoch_exe_inc @gimulnautti @jeffjarvis Considering the number of countries China has invaded (none since 1979) and occupied (none), I’d say that statement is far less duplicitous than similar statements made by the United States or any other “democratic country”, including my own (🇨🇦).
@enoch_exe_inc @gimulnautti @jeffjarvis the goal posts are moving rapidly. China is working to expand its influence too as it gets more powerful. That's why it's been building a giant navy. Btw there are existing territorial disputes too.

@alper @enoch_exe_inc @gimulnautti @jeffjarvis Ah, the famous Sino-Indian border disputes and also the Nine-Dash Line. Be glad it isn’t the Eleven-Dash Line that certain people in Taiwan Province are pushing.

If America has a right to patrol the coastlines and seas to which it doesn’t belong, then China has a right to defend itself, and with overwhelming force if need be.

@jeffjarvis They are seeing the US withdrawing its soft power and fill the gap. Just wait until China replaces the USAID workers and the countries gratefully sell their resources to them instead of the US…
@toriver @jeffjarvis As a country we've already learned this. It's the idiots in power trying their best to put us back in the medieval times...
@toriver @jeffjarvis Europe should also do this! Why are "we" always so slow to react to a changing world..
@bazkie @jeffjarvis Europe largely leave it to NGOs, the countries have too much of a colonial past that makes it awkward.
@jeffjarvis ooh! Don't worry donold, China will sort it if you can't get it up any more.

@jeffjarvis
Was anyone expecting anything different?
@jeffjarvis To be fair, Donald left the WHO because he claimed the Chinese were taking it over. And look he must have been right because boy did they take it over.
@jeffjarvis A hegemony is being killed by Agent Orange and a new one is being born

@jeffjarvis

The next stage of global fascism becomes more entrenched by the day. Each rising power builds and "improves" upon the fascist system of the last. Now China and Russia get their turn at the imperial wheel.

@jeffjarvis

As expected, the stupidity of the current administration has no limits.

@jeffjarvis Brilliant move by China. Not that I am happy for it, though.
It is a middle finger to the US to look good, but also snubs Taiwan of any hope to become a member.
@jeffjarvis the comments are great. My favorite overall theme is the anxiety of westerners that China would be the next Empire of the World. Because we know that would be bad. Because European and American Empires are/were atrocious. No possible alternatives. Someone must maintain absolute dominance over people and the world.
TLDR News Global — Does the Collapse of American “Soft Power” Actually Matter?

Global polling shows that America's appeal has fallen sharply and China is now popular than the US internationally. So in this video, we'll look at the data, Trump's impact, the decline in America's so called "soft power" and whether it actually matters.

@jeffjarvis kind of like when the US stepped in for England in the last century… torch is moving on
@jeffjarvis that’s very nice of them. I suppose.
