Looking for a new laptop that runs Linux out of the box? Get a ThinkPad!

Lenovo has been offering ThinkPads with Fedora and @ubuntu preinstalled for a few years now. The more people who shop for these devices, the more attention they can give to this business!

Here's an article of someone discovering Lenovo's Linux program: https://news.itsfoss.com/lenovo-cuts-windows-tax/

Lenovo Cuts the Windows Tax and offers Cheaper Laptops with Linux Pre-installed

Lenovo is doing something that many aren't.

It's FOSS News
@fedora @ubuntu I still have a couple of thinkpads running Debian. Works pretty ok.
@fedora @ubuntu Fun fact: if you have a Legion notebook and you want to update your BIOS the only thing you get from Lenovo is a .exe file 😂 I think it's the same for ThinkPads. OK, if you know how, you can do it anyways, but it could be more user friendly just offering a .bin file or something.
@r3vilo @fedora @ubuntu In my experience with my T14 at least, the UEFI updates are shipped through fwupd and can be applied entirely from Linux. It’s actually the easiest device for firmware updates I own.
@NinjaCheetah @fedora @ubuntu For me not. fwupd is working but there are only a few components and not the BIOS.
@r3vilo @fedora @ubuntu there are ISO Files for thinkpads, so you can upgrade your BIOS using an USB-Stick
@r3vilo @fedora @ubuntu "Discover" in KDE that installs updates also lists and installs firmware updates both for the laptop and its peripherals.
@r3vilo @fedora @ubuntu Most "real" thinkpads support fwupd / lvfs.

@fedora @ubuntu

I just switched an old Thinkpad to @linuxmint and it's working great...except at some point over the last 8 years my Bluetooth card failed.
😁

@fedora @ubuntu When I worked at Red Hat, Lenovo was the laptop brand almost everyone used if they were running Linux. Also, looking at other projects like OpenBSD, it's the clear machine of choice for people actually developing these operating systems. I wonder if it's different now that framework and others are gaining popularity and acceptance?
@fedora @ubuntu The real question is do they have any Linux 2 in 1s
@fedora @ubuntu
Also, #Purism #system76
They are not as mainstream, but they only make linux computers and should be supported.
@joshua @fedora @ubuntu And if you are in Europe and find importing laptops from the US a hassle, try #Slimbook or #tuxedocomputers .

@fedora @ubuntu

hm, let me see.

Daily Drivers:
ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen12 (Fedora 42  )
ThinkPad T14s Gen4 AMD (Fedora Rawhide  )
Thinkpad T480 (Fedora 42 )

Collectibles:
Thinkpad x220 (Windows 2000)
Thinkpad x230
Thinkpad T420 (Debian 12)
Thinkpad T430s (Fedora 41  )
Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen4 (HaikuOS)
Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen6 (RHEL9
 )

(Yes, I do have a problem 😂 🤣)

@fedora @ubuntu Not until they start putting the Ctrl key back in the lower left corner where it belongs. Whose idea was it to break decades of muscle memory for no discernable benefit?
@fedora @ubuntu seems like a game changer to me.

@fedora @ubuntu I should advise against buying any fresh (less than 2 years old) Lenovo laptop. I'm using 2024 P14s, and issues were aplenty: https://en.osm.town/@zverik/114047549240678756

Granted, a March firmware update fixed the first three, which were the most annoying. The mic still does not work. Being a trailblazer and recompiling Linux kernel just for things to work is tedious.

State of my issues with an AMD 8840HS ThinkPad laptop and Linux: * Fan clicks when in stand-by. See https://old.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/1eneh6i/lenovo_p14s_gen5_ticking_and_emitting_heat_when/ * No shallow/deep sleep, only s2idle. * Sometimes laptop reboots on wake. * Wi-fi driver fails after hibernation until I power cycle properly. See https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=214649 * Microphone does not work (my kernel fix failed). See https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=219533 * HDMI needs to be plugged into laptop, not into the dock. * GPU freezes for a moment randomly when browsing.

@fedora Just don't, recent ThinkPads are often crap hardware-wise.

@ubuntu

@fedora @ubuntu I got a Lenovo YOGA… sound only works for a few minutes before it goes out (apparently requires someone to add support in the kernel). 🫥
@fedora @ubuntu

When I ordered my laptop back in 2020, I was surprised to see Dell offering me Linux as an OS option.
