Gathering wood from a friend for firewood. This is likely not a prime species (a mix of hemlock and something else, I believe) and there is a little rot on the outer inch of some logs. Will salvage what I can.

I really wish I had a dump trailer or dual axle trailer. A truck would also be great. And it looks like until I can afford a log splitter; I’ll be getting some exercise and working on my log splitting form.

(EDIT: Fixes for the issue described below, and for a second issue which is more severe, have now been shipped in got and got -portable 0.125)

If you are using #gameoftrees (on #OpenBSD or anywhere else) please always be diligent about checking SSH host key fingerprints.

Versioned files inside the work tree's meta-data .got directory can be created during 'got checkout' or changed during 'got update'. Files in the meta-data directory should never be under version control, yet the current implementation unfortunately allows this.

Which provides a way for malicious repositories to configure remote servers stored in .got/got.conf which would then be used by the fetch and send commands. Unless you already have the bad host key stored, SSH will ask for verification of the bad server's host key fingerprint as the last line of defense against a man-in-the-middle.

The problem was reported to me by Runxi Yu about 2 hours ago. A fix for this issue is being worked on: https://marc.gameoftrees.org/mail/1778362202.49408_0.html

do not allow versioned files in meta-data directories

Has anyone ever gotten a part time job in tech? I’d love to find one but no clue where to start; everyone wants full-time or more.

I’m looking for part-time #work if anyone sees any opportunities!

18 years SaaS/web-tangent Software Development + SRE/DevOps/Platform Engineering roles. Mostly Linux/Python/Kubernetes/etc… technical stack professionally.

Tons of interests personally, but not at a level I’d throw on a resume. I need to get my hands dirty and put some projects out there. Low level programming, microcontrollers/sensors, games, and just about anything fun.

GTA3 on IRIX? šŸ¤”
After almost two days of troubleshooting this beast finally compiles without errors. Loads and converts textures and shows start menu. šŸ˜† Don't know yet if it will ever be playable or if I'm just wasting my time. At least distcc was a big help to reduce the time of countless compile attempts.

I really want to take down this tree but it’s twisted, leaning toward power lines, and the core is rotten. But it’s also like 50’ tall.

I was just going to notch it really well, tie a line to guide it in the right direction, and hope for the best. But now I’m thinking of sectioning it to the best of my ability from a rented lift. But that’s like $300 and I’m broke…

Paying an expert $1,000+ is out of my means + the power company is no help.

Suggestions? I will share a photo tomorrow.

For those software devs who are *not* using LLMs or AI as part of your job, share what you’re working on or some info about your employer (if you’re not self-employed).

It was a warm and sunny day, finally! Salvaged some firewood that’s been buried under ice and snow for months and started cleaning up part of our yard.

Soon, I need to cut and chop about 4 cords of firewood for next year and build a good firewood shed.

Fellow Mastadonians, I have a question that I could use input on.

When everyone around me — my network, local businesses, employers, competition, etc… are all using LLMs

And ā€œpeopleā€ on social media are bragging about LLMs.

How do I, as a freelance developer, find good clients and projects? There’s no way I can compete with anyone pushing AI slop quickly and cheaply. But it seems that’s what people want to pay for.

We’ve been having issues with our wood stove (our only heat source) smoking in the house. And still cold (40°F high today and rain).

After doing some research and realizing that I can’t get a chimney sweep kit fast enough, I climbed on to my roof to discover the cap and screen was almost totally blocked off. After just removing the screen (I’ll put it back on this Summer), the draft was already significantly better! I can’t believe it clogged up so quickly.

Beautiful view though! #homestead
