@Jakra tough question, we aren’t looking at what “we” collectively need. Which may be part of the nature of elections, the outcome is a sum of personal preferences.
@fletch My question wasn't about the outcome of the election, but the health of our democracy itself. Has the process that lead to this outcome, resulted in an improvement in the health of the system, or has the de facto vote on trumpianism handed the victory to an incumbent who may not have earned it.
@Jakra earned or gifted, the alternative was beyond the pale. Dodged a bullet. USA Democrats had the problem of perfect over good. Australia has a system that ensures good and we should be thankful.
@fletch Oh absolutely, I'm not comparing a labor vs liberal win, just whether democracy itself is healthier or not.
@Jakra it’s the same, cause it’s structurally protected. That is a massive plus for Australia, and something we must fight to keep
@fletch Things like the tumpette SMS messages, the corflutes, the advertising, all of the other factors that affected the election, regardless of the outcome.
@Jakra nothing is perfect. We’re doing good, could it be better, of course, could it be worse? In almost every way. That Palmer blew millions again for nothing and <<5% of the primary vote tells me you’re not buying elections.
Edit: me to be

@fletch
Noone knew whos clives candidates were.

Lost rights to old name

Weird name

Hoping to build on trump name, which might have worked if Trump didn't wack the free trade agreement with Australia.

Very late to the party, didn't have time to build a candidate profile.

Nonsense policies.

Annoyed everyone with SMS's and over advertising.

Advertising Tucker Carson for Clive.

Amateur hour, despite the spend.

Should have spent more time and money on strategy.

Unfortunately didn't get in bed with Pauline. Would have been fun to watch that union fall apart big time in the middle of the campaign.

@Jakra

@Jakra @fletch Peter Dutton lost for more reasons than Trump. The party was a schemozzle under Biden. The election was theirs to lose.

@Jakra unfortunately the Labor, Liberal, National coalition have rigged the election funding arrangements to benefit themselves at the expense of independent and smaller parties.
Time will tell how big of an impact this alone will have on the democracy of Australia.

We shouldn't have the major parties being able to have an outsized benefit at the expense of the others.

@Jakra a strong opposition is necessary for a healthy democracy. Money in politics is corrupting. Billionaire owned media is detrimental. So many things.

@Jakra I would say the allure of right-wing populism has been severely dented in most coutries, the UK being a outlier in that regard.

It's odd that Brits haven't been similarly swayed by events in America, and have instead been voting in droves for Reform UK, a far-right party. Our rabidly conservative, billionaire-owned tabloids probably deserve some of the blame here, just as they did with Brexit.
