The Human Genome Project cost taxpayers $3 Billion.

Within one decade of completion, it had already generated a staggering return on investment of $1 Trillion, with benefits in medicine, agriculture, energy, the environment, & more.

If you want to boost the economy, funding science is one of the best things you could do.

@luckytran Alas, they don't want to boost the economy (for us). They want to *control* the economy (for them).

@ScottMGS @luckytran
It’s like the the cheaper education and housing a couple of lucky generations got never mattered

Now the billionaires are happy as they benefit from forty years of pulling the ladders up

And people are looking around asking how things changed, as if Tax Cuts For The Rich didn’t have a clear end-game
#economy

@ScottMGS @luckytran

Who is they?

@m The people who are (or support) cutting funding for science and health.

@ScottMGS

…. who?

Is this conservatives? CEOs? Capitalist? The Illuminati? Who?

@m @ScottMGS

Looking to USA you can name #Trump, #Vance, #Musk, ...

You may want to read news to get information...

@m @ScottMGS USA right wing, which comprises most of the political spectrum of that country. I don't know if you have heard about proyect 2025, but one of their main objectives is to defund, censor and or shut down science in areas they deem as "woke" like climate science and everything around. They have been also targeting Wikipedia and calling it "wokepedia" and these 5 months had seen a lot of budget cuts in scientific and research proyects, if not direct layoffs by the DOGE.
@luckytran @alice this is another reason to fund fusion and superconductor research. Even the spinoffs have been worth much more than we spend. Same goes for so many areas of basic science!

@phred4269 yup. Science has done more for the economy (and humanity in general) than all the thoughts & prayers combined.

@luckytran

@luckytran This is why they're working so hard against it. It gives light to their misdeeds and threatens their lack of accountability. It's better for other humans who would parasitize the human race to stay in the shadows of ignorance and superstition, this is why they work against things that would bring things to light.
@luckytran @lisamelton I mean, yes, fund science, but I’m curious as to how the ROI is calculated. Is that actual dollars given back to the government (ie the people), or is that private revenue generation based on public funds?

@octothorpe @luckytran @lisamelton "for every $1 invested by the federal government, the Human Genome Project's impact has resulted in the return of $141 to the U.S. economy. Further, between 1988 & 2010, human genomics generated an economic output of $796 billion, personal income exceeding $244 billion, & 3.8 million job-years of employment (note that a job-year is equivalent to one person working full time for one year)."

And then there are the medical advancements.

It's hard to tell strict ROI, but Matt Clancy makes a good argument it's like $5 on every dollar put into R&D. It's definitely a multiple of what's put in.

@luckytran The Republican Party has just announced it is cutting funding for all research. Watch as researchers head to other countries to continue their work.
@luckytran It’s a no-brainer… if you have a brain
@luckytran that doesn’t really matter if the goal is not to boost economy

@luckytran To be fair, the HGP was fundamentally an engineering project. The science came after the data was available. There were even a few engineering and science breakthroughs along the way to speed things up.

But yes, fund science (and related engineering), to invest in the future. Or don't, and open a repair shop.

Funding education, too!

@luckytran I've seen enough. Cut the NIH funding
@luckytran His ego won't let him be the dumbest person in the room.
Fill a room with scientists and him and it's almost guaranteed every time, so he can't hand out awards if he can't grasp what it's for.
He's trying to force intelligent people overseas because he thinks he'll noticeably increase his position in the average IQ of the country.
