Footguns

Some of my favorite products have gotten crappier. Did they have to?

Liss is More
@caseylisscom well written as always Casey. I’m in the same boat in my relationship with Eero; why am I paying $100+ a year for features that should be baked in?! I’m opening the Ubiquiti store longingly a lot more than I ever have before.
@caseylisscom You forgot to mention Plex. 😔
@Geoffairey Holy shit the shipping Apple TV app crashes on startup for me, and hooooooooooo boy I don’t care for the IA of the beta/new experience.
@caseyliss It’s the equivalent of the Sonos app debacle. If only they’d had a case strudy from 12 months ago? 🤔
@caseyliss Sounds like it’s time for me to double check automatic updates are disabled.
@caseylisscom I’d also add 1Password and even Dropbox to that list, Casey.

@caseylisscom me: “I don’t know what Casey is talking about.”

Me, opening my security camera app just now: “Oh.”

@caseylisscom Thanks for sharing this. I literally have a synology on the way to my house and I’m seriously considering returning it unopened because of this change.
@hokiewalrus I honestly don’t know what I’d suggest
@caseyliss you got me checking out the UNAS Pro from your post, it looks promising
@caseylisscom enshitification reminds me of the quote: “You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”. There seems this inherent tradeoff…we partly loved these brands because we got to take advantage of the window of goodness where these companies “over invested” based on the capitalistic promise that their over investment would be worth it…over time. But..that promise also sets them down…the enshitification path. It might just be the natural order.
@caseylisscom it’s not unlike lots of other areas of life…like folks lucky to live in cities during the magic window of growth..all the benefits…none of the downsides. But, enshitification tends to follow. The only sure fire strategy is either keep hunting for the places/products in their magical window period…or opt out and embrace the pros/cons of attaching your horse to something that isn’t on a trajectory toward “greatness”…but also won’t suffer from the inevitable fall once they reach it.
@caseyliss just wait till you get that Sonos system on UniFi 💀
@maddox I have some friends with both and they have no problems. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@caseyliss I guess they're pros at Spanning Trees

@caseyliss It's fun because it's famously bad on Unifi, but also some people are fine.

I experience both. I have two sites and one works fine, while the other is practically a graveyard of speakers.

@maddox @caseyliss As long as you make sure to disable SonosNet things are fine.

@callin which is easier said than done because SonosNet is an "it just works" technology, a la Apple, that isn’t even exposed as a setting.

You can't just turn it off.

It's just something that happens. And it all depends on how you set up your speakers.

There are 3 schools of thought for a reliable set up of Sonos on Unifi and none are bullet proof :(

@callin @maddox I wasn’t aware that was something a person could do
@caseyliss @maddox SonosNet should only be active if you have ethernet connected Sonos devices with Wi-Fi enabled. If you disable Wi-Fi on these, which you can do in the product settings, SonosNet should no longer be active. I could verify it on my Unifi setup by checking if non-ethernet connected Sonos devices showed up as connected through Wifi.
@caseyliss @maddox I have a fairly vanilla Unifi setup and some Sonos devices and everything works great for me.
@caseylisscom You nailed why I’ve used Callsheet from the day 1 launch. IMDB is just so user hostile. It’s like going down the road looking for an exit sign but only seeing billboards everywhere. 🤮
@caseyliss Same! Just swapped our 3 Eero's with Ubiquiti gear a few weeks ago and haven't looked back.

@caseylisscom

A valuable lesson on how to successfully build a product that people want 👀

“…they are often simple on the surface, but have surprising depth to them. They can mold themselves to fit my needs, but once that mold is set, they get out of my way. But more than anything else, they tend to be reliable.”

@caseylisscom If someone here thinks about switching to Ubiquiti and (like me) feeling overwhelmed? These two guides helped a ton—I watched them, bought the recommended gear, and couldn’t be happier. Highly recommend.

@caseyliss I mostly agree, though I certainly wouldn't use Apple's SSD upgrade prices as an example of "respect" for their users 😆
@caseylisscom @caseyliss I was looking into getting a Synology for my first NAS, but between this and their lollygagging on releasing new products with up to date specs, I went with a UGreen one instead
@caseylisscom no joke – I'd just started reading the Sonos paragraph, and then my bedroom speaker (grouped with the kitchen) randomly dropped out for 2 minutes 🤦
