#gsa has told #nasa to vacate it’s only office in #nyc

https://nasawatch.com/personnel-news/nasa-is-terminating-the-giss-lease-in-five-weeks/

This facility is unique in that it is a partnership between #columbia and nasa with about 2/3 of the 120 people in the building being researchers employed by Columbia. This lab could not exist at all outside of nyc.

This lab, along with #gfdl in Princeton NJ were the first to come up with how sensitive the #climate is to inputs of CO2 in the 1979 Charney report.

We still make estimates of future climate change today.

NASA Is Terminating The GISS Lease In Five Weeks

This was just sent to all NASA Goddard and GISS employees by Makenzie Lystrup

The original Charney Report that says doubling CO2 will yield 1.5-4.5 degrees C temperature change (
https://geosci.uchicago.edu/~archer/warming_papers/charney.1979.report.pdf
)
featured these two models from #NOAA 's #GFDL and #NASA 's #GISS - incidentally, gfdl was also in the news yesterday

https://www.propublica.org/article/trump-noaa-budget-cuts-climate-change-modeling-princeton-gfdl

" The gutting of NOAA was outlined earlier this month in a leaked memo from the Office of Management and Budget that detailed steep reductions at the Department of Commerce, which houses the science agency. ... NOAA’s overall funding would be slashed by 27%…
most significant target is the office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research ⎯ a nerve center of global climate science, data collection and modeling, including the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory ⎯ which would be cut by 74%. “At this funding level, OAR is eliminated as a line office,” the memo stated.”

I have never been a tweeter. But a colleague shared this with me.

It predates the announcement by nasa brass by a day.

@realdogeusa Canceling the $8.4M GISS contract is a win for taxpayers. The Department of Government Efficiency’s audit found redundant Earth science grants that duplicated private-sector climate data capabilities. NASA’s core mission is space exploration—not propping up legacy climate models.

@atthenius dogeai_gov is an ai bot, built by a non-government person specifically to talk about government waste, fraud, and abuse. Makes 2 posts per day, but mostly comments on other people's posts.

@MisterMadge yes - I know it’s a bot. But bots like all ai hallucinate and are seldom prescient. They draw from a database of information. This bot is an indicator of a database update in all likelihood.

The statistical probability that a bot would scoop news of my offices closing after 65 years of operation less than a day from an official announcement are small.

Where can I find that raw data the bot pulls from.

@atthenius I agree I found it very strange to be so on point - I fell into a rabbit hole with this bot. It's an open source project on GitHub https://github.com/saihaj/doge-ai

It seems like the context it has is every draft congressional bill, the post from Red Line News that it replied to (see top of my screenshot), and whatever tuning they did on the writing style.

@MisterMadge Wow- so there is a draft bill somewhere to eliminate us in particular. Thank you for digging into this. (!!!!!)
@MisterMadge @atthenius is the goal of this bot's developers to satirize the bills? They say it's to make policy more accessible but it seems more like flooding the discourse with plausible garbage. I could imagine a bot reply that linked to facts and analysis but LLM "AI" output isn't capable of accurately summarizing complex topics so by spouting "facts" it's probably adding more confusion than anything.
@enobacon @MisterMadge I have no idea of the goal. But the thought that there is a desire to get rid of climate research seems totally plausible

@enobacon @atthenius i wouldn't categorize it as satire. As a technical achievement I'm impressed how it can quickly integrate new bills into it's context and discuss them. But it's built to be an advocate not a neutral reporter.

Additionally the developer said it's tuned to the X audience for better engagement. Good case study of how "the medium is the message".

@atthenius Can't of a curse bad enough for those people, at least one that I would post in public.

Thank you and your colleagues for all your incredibly important work!

@atthenius I'm sorry. Is there anything I can do to help?
@atthenius A better written article is https://archive.is/CQeni but it doesn't use a photo giving me credit in the byline.
@atthenius Columbia capitulated to the Trump administration and look what they get
@sc68cal @atthenius It is a two-for hitting climate change science at NASA and Columbia University.
@atthenius Let me guess. Prime real estate.
