Converted an old laptop I had lying around to an #immich server. The setup was painless and I had the whole thing running in 15 minutes. Sourcing a spare SSD from another machine took longer than that. Next step will be to copy all media currently stored on Google Photos and see how it goes.
Yesterday the server was down because the laptop decided to enter sleep (when I’ve told it not to) and this morning it was also offline but it was something else. The fans were full on so it was doing something but I suspect not very useful. Could not bring the display up or switch TTY. Couldn’t even hard reboot. Had to remove the battery. Until I have eyes on the machine there’s not much to say. Planning on setting up #munin.

#munin monitoring setup done! ✌️ Was not as straightforward as I expected but it wasn't Munin's fault.

Took me quite some time to figure out that the firewall was blocking access to port 4949 on the #immich server.

Without that Munin was blind. 🐦‍⬛

Laptop died this morning… this setback was unexpected. Had a good run, got it a decade ago (was a corporate Dell machine) but had been sitting unused in recent years.

Found an Intel NUC from the same era on #olx for 65€. It will take server duties from now on.

The server is dead, long live the server.

#immich server is back online on the new machine. Double the drive size as a bonus. #clonezilla took care of cloning the old drive to the NVMe on the NUC. Had trouble booting at first until I switched to a fallback initramfs. From what I understand I might need to rebuild the existing #initramfs images. The joy and terror of #selfhosting 😬

Now using my local NAS as storage for #immich. Plenty of space and the rent has been paid already 🏡

Next step: Google Photos import. That’s going to take a while, got some 80GB to copy over.

This is going to take a while... and it's only 20GB worth of Google Photos.

Three more batches of the same size to download and copy to the local server.

#immichgo doing a fine job so far!

Copy process finished yesterday. I took it easy with batches of 20GB so not to push the server too hard and leave enough time from the scheduled backups from my home #NAS to it’s offsite clone to complete.

I’ve since uninstalled the #googlephotos app from my phone and will be testing #immich thoroughly.

Once that’s done I’ll kick off migrating my wife’s Google Photos too. She was the one kicking off this whole thing to begin with. Her quota is almost gone and we have no plans to upgrade. 🤓
