@indivisibleteam honest question, I read through the first bit of the bill and it states clearly there that REAL ID is an acceptable form of ID. This post suggests a driver’s license isn’t good enough, is MI atypical in having REAL ID driver’s licenses?
I am fully against voter suppression, but there seems to be a disconnect from what I see the bill saying it will do versus what people are suggesting it will be used for.
@Caillte Not every state has RealID licenses. Not everyone has a license. State ID cards don't have RealID. Plus, you need to have documentation to get on the voter rolls. We already have a system for this and keeping an eye on purges that happen is already a task.
This bill is forcing people to use less accessible forms of ID as a way to make voting less accessible. Not everyone can access those documents, and they will only become less accessible with this administration. For example, I can't get a passport anymore, my gender marker on all of my documents is an X.
Forcing it to be in person is another way this is making voting less accessible. This is also an existing pattern they've used to suppress votes. Limiting the number of days and hours to vote and limiting the number of voting stations in targeted communities has been used to disenfranchise people across the country.
Creating more barriers for eligible people to vote is not helping election security.
