@nixCraft Immobile 5G data?
@gumnos @nixCraft that's called #BFWA (Broadband Fixed Wireless Acces)...
@kkarhan
yeah, AT&T likes to rebrand things (FTTH → FiOS, in this case BFWA → "Internet Air"). ☺
@nixCraft been waiting for the promised 10gbit fiber they'd put down 3 years ago, currently still on coax cable, occasionally use my 5g as backup and that also works okay but has a meh latency and is definitely slower than cable, let alone fiber
@anthropy Coax can be quite fast. Just, don't forget the terminator.
@VickForcella I mean how could one forget
@anthropy @VickForcella and if your internet ever goes down, you know it'll be back.
@nixCraft Digital Subscriber Line, if "cable" only means TV cable. 😉
@macst3r @nixCraft relatedly wondering if ‘full fibre until about 20 metres thataway at which point a hilarious amount of layered legacy compatibility occurs resulting in a coaxial connector there’ is still ‘cable’
@macst3r @nixCraft The technical standard is DOCSIS
@nixCraft Point to Point wireless provider
@colebrodine Ouch, those sucks, my condolences.
@cerberus1746 It is what it is. Its the best I can do. Better than Starlink at least.
@nixCraft in terms of sheer data use mostly fiber optic broadband however even when I'm at home I have a tendency to use mobile data especially late at night when I'm lying in bed my bedroom is on the exact opposite side of the house from our Wi-Fi router and on top of that there's some kind of interference above and beyond the usual on 2.4 gigahertz
@nixCraft the interference is intermittent too I personally suspect it's some kind of ancient cordless phone used by one of the neighbors didn't get this at last place that we were at and it interferes with my Bluetooth headphones as well unfortunately my RTL-SDR doesn't go up to 2.4 ghz otherwise I would probably track that down by now. Note that 5 ghz isn't an option in my bedroom because again at the extreme edge of the routers range p
@nixCraft
Point-to-point RF broadband network.
@nixCraft @catsalad copper. So that people want to steal it, just like others want to steal the data going through it.
@nixCraft fiber optic ISP DTC Communications. Likely the best ISP I've ever had. World's better than AT&T that I fought with for somewhat decent Internet when I lived in Nashville.
@nixCraft DSL. Yes I life in Germany.
@nixCraft home ADSL+ otherwise mobile 5G
@nixCraft cable. Fiber is literally across the street but I can't use it.
@nixCraft fiber 500Mbps symmetric, and 200Mbps on 5G for my phone.
@nixCraft VDSL2. It’s the only thing available to me and the incumbent is not planning to upgrade to fibre any time soon… maybe in 2029?
@[email protected]
My ISP gives me 100 Gbps over normal cat5 ethernet cable, so I'm not sure what to choose: it's neither fibre optic, nor it uses a cable modem 🤔
@m0xEE @nixCraft 100G over cat5? How is that even possible?
@[email protected] @[email protected]
Ha-ha-ha! A typo of course, megabits it is 😆
@nixCraft I run my whole family off a 5g mobile data router. Works perfectly, hardly ever drops out and is cheaper. Costs me £20 for unlimited data. Download rates easily handle the kids all on tablets and/or watching netflix etc

@nixCraft ADSL2 at the end of a very long and old copper cable, i.e. rubbish. The town has rolled out Passive Optical Network with 1 Gbit to most properties, but Orange, the principle contractor, can't be arsed with some of the smaller streets or where there is complex access, so we're stuck waiting...

5G is way faster but even more expensive than the obscene price SFR charge for such a terrible connection.

@nixCraft HFC is getting an upgrade in Aus this year. So my speeds will increase from 100/40 at least.
@nixCraft classic 16Mbit DSL and vectoring is not possible
@nixCraft wireless internet service provider.
@nixCraft 40Mbit DSL/copper line. Fibre just appeared on the utility poles on my village road so maybe upgrade soon? 😁
@nixCraft aDSL over copper. It's the fastest service available in this geographic area that doesn't fund Elmu.
@nixCraft 25/10 ADSL2+ 😭
No fiber here (Random dead zone in the middle of ottawa ontario canada)
@nixCraft Hybrid Fibre/Coax… with a 4G back-up.
@nixCraft DSL with additional 4G bandwidth
@nixCraft Hybrid Fibre Coaxial I think
@nixCraft i guess fiber? Tbh i mostly depend on wifi snd i only have my server connected physically to the router
@nixCraft only suffering from 1Gps / 200 mbps fiber connection... hoping to move to a proper isp with symmetric connection. For years used a humble 4G router that worked fine for my usage.
@nixCraft There are only two options in my town, cable from Comcast or fiber optic from the local telco. I have Comcast, primarily because I also have their cell service, and don't feel like changing to a service that would be only marginally better and cost more, because I would have to find a new cell service.

@nixCraft we get regular twisted pair Ethernet into our apartment, up to gigabit symmetric and just DHCP to get up to five public IPs - no proper ipv6 tho, only 6RD x.x

There's also a few fibers coming into the apartment but not sure where the other ends go..

@nixCraft 200/200 optic fibre as the main line.
And a 5G connection for the automatic fallover.
The 5G sucks but at least it keeps this freelancer online
@nixCraft I voted Fiber, as the question was specific to the primary connection used. However, I am commenting, because in addition to the 8Gbps symmetric XGS-PON fiber connection, I also have a 2Gbps/200Mbps cable connection as an automatic failover, plus 200 gigs/month of 5G+ data for extra failover.
@nixCraft 5G/700M fibre, eligible for 10G/2G :3
@nixCraft VDSL (fibre to the end of the street, twisted pair copper from there).
@nixCraft Germany. I miss decent internet so much

@VileLasagna @nixCraft here in podunk Woodstock, Ontario, a town of about 50k people, I can get 3Gbps symmetrical fibre.

We’re moving back to Waterloo, which has two world-class universities, frequently calls itself Silicon Valley North, and about 600k people, and the best I can get is the 1G/50Mbps cable I had five years ago.

Glad I didn’t upgrade here, it would be a huge letdown.

@Taffer I mean, back when I was in backwater sheep country Aotearoa Zealand, one day a guy just showed up and wired fiber straight into my living room. I didn't even end up using because the Cable connection I had gave me already like 900Mbps down was and way cheaper

Here in "First world Europa" I'm back to just shitty DSL and I'm supposed to be thankful for it
