I don't think the conservatives can't, or won't, see what Russia is. They see what Russia is, and that's what they want.
The part that they haven't grasped is that if they turn the USA into Russia, they also lose all the things that were better about the USA. Sure, they'll be at the top of the heap, but it will be a much worse heap.
