Never really liked #komoot - the whole purpose of the company was to take Open Street Map data (available for free) + community provided data (which the community gave for free) and to find a way to monetize it by putting a price tag on free data.

#cycling #osm #openstreetmap

@Rastal Quick reality check: most commercial geo companies use OpenStreetMap to some degree and put a price tag on it. There's nothing wrong with that per se and the OpenStreetMap license allows that explicitly as long as attribution is shown.

There are many reasons to shit on Komoot's recent buy-out but building a product around OpenStreetMap is not one of them.

@djh @Rastal @nakaner I will go one step further and say, in general, it's awesome companies are building on top of open data and open source projects and even more so when they contribute back (and #Komoot very much did this, sharing open source projects such as Photon, contributing data back to OSM, sponsoring #MapLibre).
@bart @djh @Rastal @nakaner And they show a proper attribution on the website, which already is more than too many others, including some big names.
@richlv @djh @Rastal @nakaner Yes, they even put MapLibre in the attribution, which they don't have to do. Flixbus also does this.
