Mac Studio benchmarks, Mac Pro chip rumors, the value of products with colors, and the rumored UI redesigns that may come to this fall's Apple OSes.

Accidental Tech Podcast: 630: Time to Spiral

Three nerds discussing tech, Apple, programming, and loosely related matters.

@atpfm I wonder if Apple’s colour decisions are more informed by ‘respecting the materials’, than disliking rich colour. Yes, cars have a range of colours, but they’re all the result of paint. You lose the material under paint; you can’t feel it or its properties, only the paint layer. Apple anodising aluminium and titanium is more ‘respectful’ (I guess), but results in lesser colours. Compared to their use of materials that can be coloured easily, like in the iPhone 5C or original iMac

@atpfm Can I just say I am excited for design overhaul… down the road… after they fix other things & ship Personalized Siri (even though that is a different team yes yes).

I am curious—as to what @siracusa eluded to—what problem would they be solving? iOS 7 was solving a problem (even though execution was rough initially).

Great design isn’t about chasing trends so it needs to be 3x or 5x better (I’m just making numbers up) or don’t bother & just cover all edge cases as to not break things.

@atpfm @siracusa my best guess is the Human Interface Design team started work on this after visionOS was done. So a few years. If rumor is true of course.
@atpfm these are….. NOT ATTRACTIVE FROM ANY ANGLE! @siracusa
@atpfm I'm really disappointed to hear that you have betterhelp as a sponsor. They have a track record of selling PII to big-tech, working with Non-Licensed Therapists, having the Attendant just vanish without offboarding, and paying a far-lower rate to the therapists than comparable companies. :(
@atpfm meanwhile on this week's episode of Tales from the Other Side of the Walled Garden
@atpfm in all seriousness though. Unless the apps in question are iOS only, a cheap Android tablet may do the trick instead of fighting iOS.

@atpfm re: ipad apps side by side

i think you're underestimating how hard stage manager is to use. If you open app a, then open app b by dragging it onto the screen, they will stay together in the given arrangement unless someone manually closes one app.

So if you disable the side thingy showing previous apps (and maybe the dock) in stage manager, tapping either app from the home screen will open the set-up pair, and its hard do disturb the arrangement

@nleanba @atpfm after getting the side by side arrangement you want, can’t you enable “guided access”, which can be used to effectively lock the arrangement on the screen and disable/enable specific features like volume control and app switching or whatever? Basically turn it into a kiosk iPad only admins can unlock and use the full OS
@atpfm I love the way my Audioengine speakers (in red!!) fit perfectly under my monitor on their neat angled desktop stands that work in horizontal or vertical orientation.
@atpfm you don't pronounce the dot in VW EV names. It's ID3, ID4, ID5, ID7, ID Buzz and of course, ID Every1.

@mluisbrown That's better.

I still hate it.

@atpfm the reason that the backpack is on the "cancelled” list isn't because of it's use by a certain Plumber bros. but because the CEO of the company that makes it offered to give the name of who purchased the backpack through it's serial number
@atpfm I’m not sure if it was mentioned anywhere around these iOS redesign rumors or if I missed hearing it, but one I think I don’t think was mentioned when reflecting on iOS 7’s overhaul was that it was somewhat necessitated by the phone lineup going Retina. The change in hardware was a big reason for the change. I don’t sense a similar urgency for the change next year … and it comes across as change for the sake of change.
@mvk @atpfm My wildly speculative pet theory is that they’re preparing for a future where Vision devices take off and Continuity is expanded to be able to move apps from all Apple devices over to them. (Also iPhone mirroring.) In this context you’d want apps to be AR ready.
@atpfm In Casey’s description of spatial views on the Vision Pro, I keep hearing that it’s a “rectangle of death”.
@atpfm
Regarding car #infotainment
Something additional bothered me ever since: modes.
Sometimes a lot of items just cannot be seen/used. For example, when I go into reverse in my Polestar 2 it turns the whole display into the camera picture.
While I enjoy the largest possible viewfinder, the self inflicted loss of other controls at the same time is annoying.

@atpfm @caseyliss The thing about colors is well-known in retail. You won't buy it (if you would, they would make it). A good comparison is “Diesel" clothing. They make wild stuff in reflective neon green so the stores look interesting. People buy the jeans and black t-shirts. The colorful products only exist for merchandise display.

So they make some phones they don't want you to buy, and a green iMac that Marco puts in his back office.

@atpfm @caseyliss It is a cultural difference. I might think “cool orange phone”, but in other cultures it might be “who is this jerk?”. Look at “tall poppy syndrome" for the European version. They are working with these problems.
@atpfm I'm surprised @caseyliss that you're talking about the ID.1 being ~Golf equivalent - this is 2 sizes down, replacing the e-Up which I assume never went to the US because the range was more like 120mi. The ID.2 replaces the Polo, which I'm surprised didn't go to the US. The Golf replacement is the ID.3 - it amazes me that VW's giving up the Golf branding though.
@karanj my bad. This was based mostly on shape; I didn’t have the chance to look up dimensions.

@caseyliss all good, I guess not having seen the Up (which it does have a significant resemblance to) or ID.3 for context would make it tricky to guess.

If you want to see the range, the launch video here has all their coming models, with the last 15 min focusing on the ID.1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqw2YJtCbRk

@atpfm I disagree with Casey's notion that you wouldn't want good audio for video games. I think video games and movies fall into the same category audiowise and noone would say the same thing about movies. I'd even wager games require higher fidelity because it's more important to properly locate footsteps and such things.
@atpfm I thought that they were holding off on releasing nice colors on macs until they have an update where the specifications are lackluster.
@atpfm maybe I’m missing something John, but why do you need an off switch on your speakers? Can’t you just use the mute button on your keyboard? PS I joined mastodon just to post this, but I’m a very long time listener to atp and kinda looking forward to using a new social app that’s maybe not filled with garbage. Wish me luck!
@z_kinney I trust the hardware dongle more than I trust macOS (and Windows) to retain per-output-device volume settings across multiple accounts and OSes.
@z_kinney. Welcome to the Fediverse! Nice server choice by the way. I’ll check it out. How did you discover it?
