Spotify is literally hosting an Andrew Tate podcast on “how to recruit and exploit women for pornography.”

They were hosting three of them. Two were removed because of public pressure, but one remains. He literally should have no platform for any reason.

Please boycott Spotify until they end this. And contact them to let them know that he’s a repugnant pile of shit who needs to be punched in the face.

@markwyner I have often thought about cancelling my spotify account, as they pay next to nothing to artists. I have to admit, I continued using the app for my music and podcasts, just with a bad conscience. Not proud of that...
I had a Premium account that I got with a phone contract.
I just cancelled it.
Your message came up in my timeline, and I looked up Tate on spotify. It was the last drop in the bucket for me. Thank you for giving me the last push I needed to delete spotify. I did let them know that I cancelled because they still give a platform to the likes of Andrew Tate.
@isa I’m with you. The lack of equity for artists is a crime in itself. This, however, is absolutely abhorrent. Imagine being the person who is like “sure, we can host these shows.” Anyway, I’m happy my post was influential for you. Thanks for letting me know. 🙌🏻

@markwyner @isa I use Tidal to stream music and I like it.

The ultimate goal is to own physical copies of the artists I love and be able to listen to them remotely somehow, but that day is not today.

@EyeOfTheWolf

Perhaps you’re in luck. @stux recommended this awesome tool:

https://koel.dev/

Roll your own streams.

@isa

Koel

Music streaming server that works

@markwyner @EyeOfTheWolf @isa It also has apps for iOS (and android i think) with offline download feature that's quite awesome

and bonus.. backgrounds in the web ui!

@markwyner @EyeOfTheWolf @stux @isa How does Koel compare to Funkwhale?

@BafDyce @markwyner @isa @EyeOfTheWolf it has no federation and if fully ‘private’ so only accounts you create

Its more like a personally Spotify and not a social part ;)

For me a req was a good iOS app with download capability

@markwyner @EyeOfTheWolf @stux @isa I struggled with getting koel set up (it's a long time since I dealt with setting up LAMP stack webservers...), but running Navidrome on a Raspberry Pi does a similar job and works for me. You do have to source your own Subsonic-API app for listening - I found Symfonium (paid) and Ultrasonic (free) on Android to both be suitably good. So there are plenty of options you can try.

@isa @markwyner

spotify pays rogan millions

good job dumping it

@isa @markwyner this is the way.

We are long past needing to Boycott Spotify, it's another #enshittification platform that steals from those it supposedly supports.

#PocketCasts is a far superior podcatcher

Radio streaming from #KEXP, #SomaFM, and #RadioParadise and others is a much better experience.

@isa @markwyner I'm using deezer. They pay artists more and it's working wonderfully (except for podcasts)
#fuckspotify
@markwyner as if I needed another reason to cut my subscription...only issue is swapping family (spouse & not-so-tech-savvy in-laws) to another service like Qobuz...
@willco94 @markwyner deezer is very much alike, and you can transfer playlists afair.
@willco94 @markwyner Tidal is pretty user friendly. I got my while family on it and they love it more than spotify
@markwyner holy fuck, he needs to be stopped
@markwyner been boycotting Spotify for years.

@markwyner I use #Koel as personal self-hosted music lib!

No #Spotify

Koel

Music streaming server that works

@stux beautiful! Can’t wait to check this out. 🙌🏻
@markwyner Been using for some time now, the web UI + iOS is amazing! Worth the 10 bucks for the dev

@stux @markwyner

Ooh, looks nice! Running Navidrome atm, but I'll try this out as well and see where they differ.

Also, yep, Spotify is horrible. I was using my family's subscription but recently moved off it because of many reasons. I thought their continued support of Joe Rogan + paying so little was enough, but this is just another reason to not look back.

I remember trying to use Spotify for podcasts, but the UX is vastly inferior to the FOSS alternatives (+ a big feature of podcasts are that they are just RSS) and you still get ads as a paying subscriber. Shit platform overall.

@markwyner Andrew Tate embodies all that is wrong with US society. No more need be said. If you don’t understand, I can’t possibly explain it to you.
@markwyner #Spotify surely knows what's going on here
@markwyner Yuck he is such a creep! I can't believe Spotify would publish something so vile. What's a good alternative music and podcast platform to switch to?
@markwyner Is it only exclusive to Spotify only the podcast? 😬😬
@matty not sure if it’s hosted elsewhere.
@markwyner I am sorry. I can not boycott Spotify. I never was there, I never will be there. Not even if they were the only music-streaming service left!
@markwyner boycott Spotify, FULL STOP. It’s sad how popular it’s become, despite the push back from artists over the years.
@markwyner
First off, if you've paid for music since 2000 I'm laughing my ass off at you. Second, isn't this like him describing exactly how he committed the crimes he's accused of? Third, did he make this in the US where he could be charged with promoting human trafficking and prostitution?
@markwyner already been gone for a while but holy shite, now everyone, head to Bandcamp and Qobuz and BUY your favourite music! Or go and buy/rip CDs. Its a much better way to support artists and it's pay once and keep forever DRM-free :)))
@blayd @markwyner if you broke its not possible without streaming I just had to go back to pirating songs
@blayd @markwyner hm, i have to admit i like the comfort of streaming.. i've moved to tidal a few years ago because spotify doesnt pay artists basically anything at all.

Tidal is paying artists more but its owned by jack dorsey who is one of the sketchy american bilionaires.

I was thinking about moving to qobuz. Do you have experience with them?

@azucat

I looked up the numbers. None of them oay what they should. I use streaming for discovery, convenience (or “comfort” as you mentioned), and when a record isn’t available for purchase. But I buy music from artists on vinyl.

I’ve heard good things about Qobuz. Same with Deezer.

@blayd

@markwyner @blayd yea same, i have a pretty big collection of vinyl.

The streaming is more like listening to radio for me. I discover new stuff and its just really convenient that i can just try out new music, without commiting to buying it.

Tho i guess i really should get rid of the streaming some day.

Like i just have to admit that at least 50% of why i use streaming is because its soo fucking cheap. And well since it is so cheap small artists wont ever get payed well.
@azucat @markwyner I guess my gripe is they really want you to subscribe, but if you want to stream in hi-res and have some hefty discounts if you go to buy something, its pretty nice. They've had a Linux downloader in the works for a while but its still only windows and Mac, a person from support said its still on the way, the team seems nice and responsive.
@blayd @markwyner okay i just checked qobuz out. They support free transfering of playlists etc. from other services which is cool. But sadly lots of my music from tidal isn't available on qobuz. I listen to a lot of more niche metal/punk/electronic artists so i guess it's understandable that there isn't everything available.

I kinda like the magazine thingy they're doing. Tho it appears as tho it is in big parts popular music,, so idk

@azucat

I also listen to tons of metal, punk, and hardcore. Most of the bands I listen to are selling on Bandcamp. And you can stream them a few times for free before you buy. After that you can stream what you buy forever.

@blayd

@markwyner seems every week or so I find a new reason I’m glad I’ve never had Spotify. This one is sure one helluva doozie too.
@markwyner I prefer to pretend that these people don't exist. As indeed in my world they do not. Appalling cruelty and exploitation is most entertaining in fairy tales.
@markwyner brought to us by the party of family values
@markwyner social media and media outlets allow big money to control the narrative. Twitter lost the open dialogue when Musk and the nazis bought it. Fuck Spotify. Fuck X. Go us!
@markwyner
Be sure to leave them a review.
@markwyner I haven't used Spotify much recently. I'm cancelling my subscription.
@markwyner I just canceled my family plan. I tried Deezer back in the day, but it was nowhere near the Spotify's algo and the app was subpar. But I don't want to be an enabler here. I reached out to their support twice. The 1st time they closed the chat after reading my comment and the 2nd time I had a chance to point out that the agent should report this to their superv. after all their job is in danger if the paying clients continue leaving the platform. No comment at this point they said.

@markwyner

Are you kidding me? F Spotify, and Andrew Tate. Boycott for sure, but also last time I checked isn’t human trafficking illegal? Disgusting! 🤮

Gavin (@[email protected])

Stop using #Spotify https://swedenherald.com/article/this-is-how-much-spotify-donated-to-trumps-inauguration Try #qobuz who are from France, pay artists more than most, and also let you buy DRM-free downloads of hi-res music to play locally or on a NAS. Also, human-curated playlists, no AI slop and a magazine built into the app.

@markwyner been meaning to get rid of that for a while. i had premium through a family subscription, but i don't care, that bullshit platform is not something i ever want to use again.

(i will say it had some good auto generated playlists)
@etherealsasha yeah, we have a family plan as well. I have to migrate my whole fam. Worth it, though. It already feels good.
@markwyner sadly I'm not the one who controls the family plan, so I've got to talk everyone else into switching

@etherealsasha I am in control and I still have to do that. 😂

My kids will understand. They’re well versed in the injustices of the world. But they won’t be happy about it.

@markwyner You should also boycott #AppleMusic because his Podcast is available there too!

@markwyner

How is that legal? Surely that goes beyond free speech?
