A second German tourist was held in a detention centre after having his Visa revoked by the U.S.

Sielaff is back in Germany after being held for two weeks without cause or explanation.

Jessica Brösche, a German tattoo artist who spent 8 days in solitary confinement without a pillow or a blanket, is still being held. She’s been detained for six weeks.

The U.S. is not a safe place to travel anymore.

Vote with your dollars (and your feet!) and go literally anywhere else.

This is especially applicable to my fellow Canadians. Don’t risk your freedom or support the economy of a country whose leader is threatening to annex us.

Watch list??
This puzzled me until I remembered a female German woman that had become radicalized and delivered a bomb many years ago.
We are at such a low point in our national security that this will probably become a common event.
@broadwaybabyto I will not go unless I have to for work or something which might happen. However, certainly not going to spend vacation money there. its really unfortunate. Have lots of American friends and still like them all but they can come and visit me. IF their president gets his way they won't even need a passport soon. Wonder if appointed president Musk holds the same view about taking us over.
@bmoore123 @broadwaybabyto A part of me wishes I could just leave this country, but the other part of me doesn't want to leave the first area that has truly felt like home to me. If I leave I could be risking my health stabilization too. It's so shit right now for us to be put in these positions. :(

@bmoore123 @broadwaybabyto Going "for work" (i.e. business meetings, meeting colleagues, for a conference, etc) is exactly the problem. Do NOT tell the authorities at the border that you are there "for work". They will assume you are entering the US in order to work (without a permit). Say "meeting colleagues" etc. And if they start suspecting something, point out repeatedly that you are employed at home and will return after a week.

I thought this was basic business travel knowledge?

@tml @broadwaybabyto I think it is. Never tell them unless I have to.
@broadwaybabyto My last travel to the U.S. was a business travel. Just one month after 9/11, I found the country changed and unwelcoming. That was 24 years ago and the desire to visit has decreased since then. Since the 90’s till then I had been in the U.S. 1-2 times a year.

And even before Sept 11 2001 US immigration was already very strict especially if they suspected the foreign visitor had any reason to stay in the country to work. Artists entering on a B2 visa can only practice their art if unpaid.

And simply admitting that you're planning to marry an American is a big red flag. Never tell the border official this unless you've obtained the appropriate marriage or fiancé visa.

@bornach I spent half a day in INS confinement in 1981. I was just switching planes in Miami on my way to Costa Rica.

But when planning it, my parents overlooked that I was just 15 and to switch planes I had to pass through the U.S. and unaccompanied minors were not allowed to enter.

It took a dozen hours of frenzy phone calls to find an adult that would "take care" of me in the U.S. while getting on the next flight.

Stories such as yours will become more commonplace unfortunately.

"British comic creator R.E. Burke detained by ICE after Canada border issue"

I generally try to avoid crossing the US border unless forced to by work (used to be an academic). Last time was in 2018 when I had to attend my Mum's funeral and had to book a flight at short notice which transitted through Chicago O'Hare.

British Comic Creator R.E. Burke Detained By ICE After Crossing Border

Becky Burke is known in the British comics scene as writer/artist creator R.E. Burke. I know her from Thought Bubble and you can see her work profiled on Broken Frontier. This was her last sketch diary comic posted on Instagram during her travels. She had been taking a four-month backpacking trip across North America until she was […]

@broadwaybabyto If it only was that easy! Those people were visiting their American friends/partners, that sounds like the last thing you'd stop doing... Sad perspectives!
But no, it isn't safe.

@broadwaybabyto in Brösche's case, I don't understand why she's being detained at all.

My understanding is that if Immigrations suspect that someone wants to work on a tourist visa, they are denied entry and then put onto the next flight back home?

@danielaKay @broadwaybabyto AFAIK it's specifically because she came in through Mexico. Not that that's in any way a good reason for it, just the reason they're using.
@broadwaybabyto don’t consider flying there either, their airspace is unsafe.
@broadwaybabyto as a trans person, I haven't felt safe going there since Trump's first term. But now? I'm not sure I'll ever feel safe going to America again.
@broadwaybabyto I have no problem extending my boycott on visiting the US that has lasted since ?George W's tenure.
@broadwaybabyto As an American I hate that these sorts of travel advisories are needed, and that they should start being official advisories from governments around the world.

Most visitors and immigrants make this country better. And can help us understand the rest of the world better.
@broadwaybabyto ...and now, apparently, a British national has been detained by ICE crossing back to the US at the Canadian border.
@broadwaybabyto and here’s something else you can do to hit them right where it hurts. If you live somewhere else, push for your government to welcome with open arms, the marginalized people that are being mistreated. You could save lives. Since they don’t want us to be happy and successful, maybe someone else does. Maybe some other place will see us for who we truly are and treat us like the human beings. We’ve always been.

@broadwaybabyto

People with visible tattoos have long been harassed and delayed by both sets of border control personnel; that’s nothing new.

The werks-long detention takes us a few levels down.
