You nail down precisely why building Mastodon and the Fedi is vital:

"When you join federated networks, you're playing a vital part in constructing alternatives to digital monopolies."

And digital monopolies are destroying our society.

It's not mentioned but #Bluesky, where all the liberals are now flocking, is also not an open system. It's another digital monopoly, and as such, is not just vulnerable, it inhibits the growth of truly defensible open systems.

@mastodonmigration @Daojoan Although I do agree with you, I fear the truly defensible open systems, by their very nature, are unable to grow as fast as they'd need to in order to absorb the impact of the exodus from digital monopolies.

Bluesky may well be a necessary buffer. It will go the way of the others; that's inevitable. But it may be needed to give the fediverse time to get stronger and more able to scale up.

Even with it, some or our servers are buckling under the pressure.

Interesting point. Would counter that it is an chicken and egg problem. The Fedi grows organically through user financial support. There is nothing technological limiting this growth. Provisioning more capacity happens when people join and support their instances. This makes the Fedi resilient, but not good at sharp increases.

With all the progressive users now funneling onto #Bluesky it is denying the Fedi the opportunity to grow naturally to meet the demand, so it will not be ready when it is needed.

These are critical times for building public social media that the interpositioning of Bluesky is denying.

Let's play this out to the logical next phase. Something happens over on #Bluesky that disenfranchises it's progressive base of users, their voices either shut off or suppressed.

When this occurs the Fedi will not be ready to absorb a mass migration, just as it has struggled in the past to manage such rapid expansion.

We need to be building now (actually over the last couple years) for a future when all corporate networks including Bluesky are entirely locked down.

@mastodonmigration @Daojoan I have no hard facts to back this up, but I do have a gut feeling that the vast, vast majority of the people now on bluesky would not contribute financially to the fediverse.

They're too accustomed to the paradigm of free use with ads.

They'd need to be truly invested in this to back it up with their pockets. And the people who are truly invested are already here.
