I've switched to lurking here for a while due to the effects the current political situation in the US is having on me. I am making some big changes to how I do things, including how I livestream and host various products of my math research. I'll be posting about the steps I take as I take them.

I have switched from #Firefox to #Librewolf on my desktops. This was pretty easy since I have been storing my bookmarks as a plain text file on my desktop for a while now. Very portable. I just wish #VideoDownloadHelper worked on Librewolf.

I am looking into #XMPP now and trying to find a server to sign up for. Does anyone know any with open registration?

I have also recently gotten into #IRC again, and am excited to get more familiar with the #Pidgin client on desktop.

Edit: Hi @librewolf !

If you do it for nostalgia, then pidgin might be the right choice, otherwise I would recommend using xmpp via a mobile or gajim or dino.im as desktop clients, to advance about 20 years in development.
There is a bunch if choices for servers, generally already long running servers have a high chance to exist in the future too. So yax.im, conversations.im (and some more) are solid.
https://joinjabber.org/docs/
lists some choices including selfhosting or managed hosting too.
Get started

There are only two easy steps: Register an account on a server Find a server Pick a client app Pick an app Congratulations! You can now open your client and give it your Jabber address to connect to the server and start chatting with some friends. Jabber addresses (also called JIDs) look just like email addresses. So if you create the account emma.goldman on server example.org, then your address will be [email protected].

@caten you could also look into matrix as messenger option.
Here is a good comparison of different messengers: https://www.messenger-matrix.de/messenger-matrix-en.html

@datenpunks_hb Thanks for the suggestion! I've heard of Matrix, but haven't looked into it yet.

@caten You can find an XMPP provider here: https://providers.xmpp.net/

I run my own fully compliant XMPP server (not listed because it's less than a year old) and so haven't needed to try any of the ones listed, so I cannot vouch for any of them.

@caten I got #VideoDownloadHelper to work on #LibreWolf from the info in the linked thread.

In a nutshell:
cp -r ~/.mozilla/native-messaging-hosts/ ~/.librewolf/

@dragonsidedd Thanks for sharing this! Unfortunately, neither copying the folder nor making a symlink is working for me on Mint at the moment. I don't have the usr/lib/ directories for Firefox and Librewolf that some people were mentioning, just the home folder ones, but I think I'm gonna give up on this one for today.
@caten if you're using a flatpak then copy the relevant dir to $HOME/.var/app/io.gitlab.librewolf-community/.librewolf
@dragonsidedd I installed Librewolf with apt, but I tried making that directory anyway and it still didn't work.

@caten You can check https://providers.xmpp.net to find a good provider. We are happy to give you an invite on our https://durare.org

We have closed open registration due to spam, but provide accounts manually for people who request one. #xmpp

@caten are you aware of yt-dlp for video download? (It's a cli tool that can save video from very many of the common sites)
@hko Yeah I am, and I tried it for the first time after I found that the extension I was complaining about here was no longer working. I got some error so after a couple tries I put it off for later. I'll try it again after I upgrade my OS this week.

@caten feel very invited to @ me if you get stuck!

i migrated from plugin-based video downloaders to yt-dlp some time ago, and found it confusing at first, but am a huge fan, now.
