@realestninja even better: #OpenRA is available too, with improved versions but the same nostalgic looks
@realestninja
It will be interesting to find out what the "certain limitations" to GPLv3 are.
But still a wild development.

@ftg from what I gathered, the source code is FOSS while official game assets etc are not.

The Generals community has already started with a roadmap where they want to reproduce the 2004 build of the game (basically the most recent patch lol), then port stuff to 64bit, isolate windows nonesense and use Vulkan etc. create Linux compat. people will of course come up with all kinds of mods etc.

To me, as a big big fan of CNC Generals, it looks like the absolute golden age of this game is about to come.

@realestninja
Yeah the assets being non-free makes perfectly fine sense.
And I think one of my colleagues is already also looking into that Generals linux port.
I guess that one was a successful nerd snipe.
@ftg @realestninja it’s always the same, coders giving it all and artists breaking the magic. Wasnt there a fully reverse engineered version of this game? i dont think the source brings much than just for historical preservation

@pancake @ftg I mean, the * in the agreement says that you can compile with original assets if you own the game. For 99.99% of the community, I would assume that this should be the case 😆

AFAIK the reverse engineered version of the SAGE engine (Strategy Action Game Engine) aka OpenSAGE was abandoned and never finished.

The most recent blog post is from 2021. The recent commits are seem to be dependabot fixes.
