We must assume that Europe is becoming the world's last democratic major hub. Imperfect, perhaps, but democratic.

As such, Europe is the prime target of the new American administration.

Everything this administration will do will be aimed at harming us.

Washington's primary objective is now to hamper Europe's ability to exert a counter-power, even if it means joining forces with the worst tyrants.

We still have allies in the United States, but not within the administration.

@N_Henin le ver est dans le fruit de beaucoup de gouvernements européens. Pas sûr qu'il y ait volonté de résister...

@N_Henin @eva_chaos
Exactly my conclusions.

Europe now needs its own continental army to face Russia. Sadly for that our politicians need backbone.

@N_Henin

I hope JD Vance's frightening speech sounds like a wake up call in Europe.

@N_Henin
The EU is not democratic at all. And even less if it gives itself the powers to cancel elections.
@windy @N_Henin Which elections were cancelled by the EU?
@Veza85UE @N_Henin That's not actually what I wrote. But event that can be argued concerning Roumania for instance.
@windy @N_Henin Which EU institution was involved in cancelling Romanian elections?

@Veza85UE @N_Henin As I said, I don't know if EU was involved in Romanian election cancellation, however it could be argued. See this video of Thierry Breton, ex-commssioner, pro-European, at the end of which he says the EU intervened in Romania.

https://reseauinternational.net/thierry-breton-revendique-lannulation-des-elections-presidentielles-roumaines-par-bruxelles/

For sure the EU Commission and the Eurogroup intervened against the results of the Greek referendum in 2015 ... ask Yanis Varoufakis for details.

@windy @N_Henin It *could* be argued if you're concern trolling or otherwise arguing in bad faith that a former EU official referring to fellow Europeans as "we" as I do on this website every day means an institution he was famously no longer employed in told the Romanian Constitutional Court to annul the elections. Otherwise, no, it cannot be argued because it's an intox heavily pushed by far-right disinfo networks. Who are, I suppose, too lazy to read up on the CCR and RO domestic politics.

@Veza85UE
OK. I hear your message.

We'll perhaps see one day if you are right about RO domestic politics not being pressured by EU.

You are wrong on two things however: I am not trolling and am not far-right.

I wouldn't be surprized if we were on the same side.
@N_Henin

@windy @N_Henin I never meant to imply you were. So many years of horseshoe assadism, horseshoe "ukronazis", horseshoe Wagner is NOT a terrorist organisation and even if it were WhatAboutAmericaBad?? etc etc have taught me not to assume. There is unfortunately a lot of permeability for Kremlin memes to seep into non-far-right milieu.
@Veza85UE
I rather invest in realism than in ideoligy.
@N_Henin
@windy @Veza85UE @N_Henin
Can you actually be specific about whatever it is that you are trying to say?
@dec23k @Veza85UE @N_Henin I am just disagreeing to a post that said: "Europe is becoming the world's last democratic major hub"
@windy @Veza85UE @N_Henin
You are doing a lot of hand-waving.
@dec23k
If I'm doing anything wrong, offending, against any rules please feel free to tell me, I might be unaware. Thanks.
@Veza85UE @N_Henin
@windy
"Curious! I am very intelligent!"
@windy @N_Henin not democratic at all? Lol. Sounds like you should head back to Shitter. This is not like your echo chamber here.
@Blahster @N_Henin Yes it does "sound" like that. But is isn''t that. If you don't agree with me, I'm sure you can do better than that in telling me why.

@windy @N_Henin at first you could start with a real argument and sources, before people might start to give you real answers.

Until then, don't expect anything else.

@Blahster @N_Henin OK. The institutions aren't the institutions of a democracy and don't function as such. Other example: the unelected president of the Commission, after being thrown out of Germany's Gov. for governing privately and undemocratically through private SMS, negociated 35 billion euros with Pfizer also through private sms on her private phone, deleted all sms and refuses now to show the contracts negociated and evicts a lobbyist who sues her. In EU, that's business as usual.

@windy @N_Henin and such an example is proof, that the whole government isn't democratic? Lol, you're funny. Please tell me you're a comedian.

While there are deficits in almost every democracy, every institution is controlled. The fact alone that you have this information is proof that this statement is correct.

Now tell me again that there are good and bad people everywhere and one doesn't define a whole group.

@Blahster @N_Henin You talk about a EU "government"? What do you mean by that?

@windy @N_Henin Have you ever heard of the EU-parliament?
I talked about your example of Germany, btw.

But don't change the subject. Back to the original question, you still didn't answer.

@Blahster
The EU-Parliament is not a real democratic parliament. For instance, it does not have a checks&balances function, it does not have legislative powers in a democratic sense.
The EU is a treaty, not a democracy, same as the UN.
@N_Henin

@windy @N_Henin and that is your take on "the EU is not democratic"?

In what world are you living? Every parliament in the EU is democratically elected and checked by another institution. The EU parliament itself is also democratically elected and defines regulations beyond the borders of the independent countries and also controlled by other institutions.

Again, tell me how this is not democratic.

@Blahster @N_Henin Describe the functions of the pariament in your country and compare them with the EU parliament. You'll find the answer. You are asking of me pages and pages of argumentation that I'm not willing to spend time writing out here in 500char bits. You have my opinion I have yours, we are that much richer now. Thanks for this conversation.
@windy @N_Henin none of that has to do with your starting point. You wrote that the EU isn't democratic and none of what you said after that had anything to do with that, and additionally, you didn't bring one argument for this claim.
@N_Henin yes but we need to wake up.
The “East” finance political parties and interfere in elections, etc. fake news, etc etc.
Since 20 years ago and we did nothing…
Instead of federate when was a good time for it we now speak in a kazilion voices … it’s a mess.
Europe does not have leadership or vision. We leave in an alternate reality.
Only united we will prevail or survive . But there are no unity.

@N_Henin Don't forget Latin America. At least for now. Brazil and Mexico in particular, but also Colombia, Bolivia, Uruguay, Chile, etc. Watch out for the return of Monroe Doctrine posturing, though.

And we have a shot at an Asia-Pacific outpost once we get rid of the fascist-adjacent coalition here in Aotearoa. We're less likely to draw their eye since spraytan hitler thinks we're a third-world backwater.

@N_Henin "not within the administration"... Do the USA still have an administration? I understood they got rid of it "for efficiency".
@N_Henin Sorry about that...good luck not being us!
@N_Henin Sad but true. And FWIW, most of us are deeply ashamed of it.
@N_Henin Exactly, time to wake up. We and Canada, New Zealand, Australia, South Korea and Japan should make an economic and militaric union. We are alone now.

@N_Henin
Europe has been becoming steadily less and less democratic over the past 20 years.

J.D. Vance is an authoritarian idiot and the current US administration is a dumpster fire.

Both of these things can be true.

Europe is a target of the US because it has become weak and servile, and Trump is a bully.

@N_Henin Us little people still believe in democracy, but you are correct, any allies you might have had in the government are either gone or severely restricted.

@N_Henin We, your allies among the US population, are legion.

I don't know how much that means right now, but it's the truth.

Our current government is illegitimate and depraved. We're hanging on for dear life over here and just hoping we will live to see the other side of it all.

@courtcan
@N_Henin
I share your grim view, and I'm happy there are different voices in the US and I feel for you at the same time. Not all safety nets of democracy in the US have failed yet. Strengthen those, call them to their responsibility. Freedom is not the right to exploit people, freedom is respect for fundamental rights.

And shout out, if there is anything we can do, let us know!

@N_Henin Canada and the EU must move closer together. If Iceland decides to join the EU, and Scotland joins after independence, it will be a natural geographic arch over the north Atlantic.
@N_Henin
Safe assumption that Brexit was an early step in that process.
@N_Henin Please treat Elon as a global security threat and act accordingly.
@N_Henin Sadly it looks l ike/sounds like USA and USSR are kinda deciding "how to split EU and what pieces to take for themselves". I think it's in both their interest that a unified "EU" does not exists. A strong EU could actually be a more democratic, more free, more all better than US and USSR combined ... but looks like that won't happen if things continue this way ..

@N_Henin hello! You have allies in North America, just like you always had.

🇨🇦

@N_Henin Your sovereignty is our sovereignty against these billionaire oligarchs that swear no fealty to any country, culture, or people's law.

Those of us who aren't insane fully support every country galvanizing yourselves and hitting them in the pocket book as hard as you can.

@N_Henin Hey, y'all think you can build a military real quick? We need a little of that deterrence please. Thx.
@N_Henin Europe? democratic? LMAO

@N_Henin EU is large enough to defend their economy and rights.

#Trump doesn't like that. He knows that if he can push the EU to the political right, there is a good chance it will fall apart.

@N_Henin
Nor in the big tech companies.
We need reliable infrastrucure asap - search engines, messenger, payment.
Won't be long until they go after signal and rob everyone they hate via PayPal.

@reticuleena

@N_Henin we can estimate the chances the majority of the EU population actually understands that. Zero.
@N_Henin First they need to seperate European countries. Sadly, that will be easy for them.
