I'm looking for a reliable (preferably EU) alternative to #Gmail. 📨📬

Uuugh I've been putting it off for YEARS, because it's such a hassle 😩, but with #Google happily changing the Gulf of Mexico's name and now #GoogleCalendar removing cultural observances such as Pride Month, Black History Month, Women's History Month and Holocaust Remembrance day... I finally need to move my email from Gmail to a more ethical alternative.

Recommendations anyone? No selfhosting pls. 😊

Google Calendar no longer includes start of Black History Month, Pride Month

Google Calendar has removed reference to observances such as the beginning of Black history Month on Feb. 1, and Women's History Month on March 1.

Would be extra nice if it had a collaboration suite built in, or if at minimum it opens pdf's or docs.
Edit: added Pride Month in the original message.
@Gina I believe MailCow integrates nicely with NextCloud which has any sort of collaboration you could want...
@Gina
i think Proton is for you then. i personally enjoy Tuta, but it doesn't have a collaborative editing built-in, while Proton are building theirs right now (it's currently quite basic but you can expect it to expand).

@Gina Been using mailbox.org for several years.

Pros:
- Has worked reliably
- Can pay with SEPA transfer
- Custom domain support
- Cheap
- Also both CardDAV (contacts) and CalDAV (calendar) (I barely use their UI)

Cons:
- Needs some UI designer love
- Non-obvious things like when you add a custom domain, your login username changes to that user@domain
- No app passwords yet
- Custom 2FA implementation that's... interesting

@Gina Probably @Tutanota then, even though it does not support GPG. But otherwise very good
@gytisrepecka Thanks for the mention! If you have any questions or would like further info about Tuta just let us know. We're happy to help ❤️

Disroot? They also host Nextcloud, Cryptpad, Mumble, Jitsi, XMPP and a bunch of other services.

@Gina In Gothenburg Sweden we have an NGO called #Fripost Since 2011 we have tried to challenge big tech by hosting democratically managed cloud solutions. We use Roundcube for webmail and also host a Nextcloud instance. We also organize events and exit Google workshops etc. We are primarily interested in local members, and document our technical specifications on github so that others can do a similar local setup, but non Gothenburg members are also welcome. www.fripost.org
@Gina I have used Protonmail for a couple years now and really like it!
@Gina have a look at https://mailcow.email - I believe they'll provide a fully hosted service. Their self-host-able version is totally superb. They're DE-based.

"No selfhosting please."
Oooh email hosting is one thing best left to others.

I have an account with http://mailbox.org which seems fine. Hosted in Germany

@marcusgreen yeah I'm still traumatized from having to manage an on-premise email server for years. Never again.

@Gina this IT malarkey is fun in the modern era isn’t it… 🤦🏻‍♂️😂

I’ve been on Startmail for years - based in the Netherlands 🇳🇱

It’s email only though… I’ve seen a lot of good things lately about CryptPad if you want collaboration tools - it’s based in France 🇫🇷

I’ve been a Proton customer for a couple of years and no complaints about the service so far, but their founder/CEO has come out as a Trump supporter so a lot of people, myself included, are moving off the platform which is a shame.

@Gina Same here. What are your thoughts on Proton?

@Gina I use Proton Mail and it was mainly because it supports standard PGP encryption, and I could import my own keys. The Proton Bridge allows me to keep it synced offline to BetterBird on my desktop.
@Gina Replacing gmail is easy, but finding a good web calendar replacement seems much harder.
@Gina for a full suite Zoho is in option, and I’m pretty sure they’re based somewhere in the EU 🤔
For just email I don’t think you can do better than purelymail :)
@Gina +1 for @mailbox_org, they got synced calendars, contacts, docs and almost everything else you might need.
keep in mind that, if you picked tutanota or proton, you'd be somewhat locked into their ecosystem.
also, i don't know if you do that already, but now would be a good opportunity get your own domain for emails so you can easily switch providers in the future.

@Gina
As others noted Tutanota and proton mail are good alternatives.

The Google maps thing is actually misleading basically they added the U.S. to the sensitive countries list making it show golf of america only in the U.S.A. for everyone else its still golf of mexico because renaming things a country doesnt own doesnt work unilaterally. The google maps thing is partially forced because google is a government contractor. Not saying it's good just saying there's nuance.

@Gina I've been looking at finishing my separation from Google. I've been on proton for a few years but it hasn't managed to replace drive for me and I can't use proton bridge on my arm SBC so that I can process email in emacs. I'm so tired of web apps.

I'm considering a next cloud service. Hetzner in Germany has it, and here in France we have a bunch, there is the CHATONS collective, chatons.org, which gives a lot of providers all open source, etc.
It's all pretty cheap no matter, ~5€ / month, but a big cloud drive adds up. I've been spending 15/month on proton.. multiple emails is mostly what I get for that.
Calendar, drive, VPN, crypto wallet.

@Gina We will have an encrypted email coming out soon! 😀

Right now we have cloud storage, VPN, and Antivirus if you're interested though
