Good. I say all these AI companies need to be go out of business ๐Ÿคฃ they are thieves. The surge in popularity of Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) app DeepSeek has sparked a selloff of shares in major tech companies after it overtook rivals such as ChatGPT to become the top-rated free app on Apple's App Store.
Nvidia, Microsoft and Meta were set to open down on Monday and the development knocked European share prices https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c0qw7z2v1pgo I hope all of their investments go to /dev/null ๐Ÿค“
Nvidia shares sink as Chinese AI app DeepSeek spooks US markets

Share prices in US and European firms fall as the Chinese technology threatens to disrupt the AI industry.

@nixCraft When you overhipe custom databases!

@nixCraft I mean, it's good in one sense that people are dumping the tools of a few companies that have definitely been thieves, but wouldn't thieving to produce its AI also be true of the Chinese company? Isn't it all based on massive theft?

I'd like to see all of it stop. These ChatGPT type tools seem to be harmful garbage all around. Technical uses of specially designed AI tools seems to be the right direction for AI as far as I can tell. The crap bots they're pushing on regular people is making them stupid and lazy, and packing the sphere of common knowledge with poisoned information.

@Nonya_Bidniss I agree sadly I donโ€™t know how common people can stop this madness.
@Nonya_Bidniss @nixCraft
But there is a difference: DeepSeeks R1 is ooen source.
You can simply download it (even in full size, in case you have the brutal compute that is necessary to run it)
There are quantized versions small enough to run on a reasonably good smart phone.
This means the public at least gets back in part what was stolen and everybody is therefor empowered to run ai locally without feeding the grifters.
@Nonya_Bidniss @nixCraft
But of course โ€“ please don't use their online version and type in your requests there. That is still a bad idea.
@populistensohn @nixCraft Yes I only just caught on to that later this morning.

@nixCraft

I am not sure they need to go out of business, but otherwise the dust is clearly unsettled.

What is happening & what should happen we've yet to learn, but now is not the time to bury our heads in the sand.

@nixCraft Ah, I can hear in the distance, a bubble starting to burst.

And it sounds incredible.

@nixCraft Wasnโ€™t there a problem with software from #China ? ๐Ÿค”
@nixCraft Oh dear, what a pity. Never mind.
@nixCraft I get so much joy from this :-)

@nixCraft

I keep seeing the stories that OpenAI is close to bankruptcyโ€” I think this news will push them over

@nixCraft It seems that once people begin to trust AI, its solutions could be skewed by flooding it with disinformation on a given topic. It is a garbage-in/garbage-out concept.

@nixCraft @briankrebs

I don't see this happen. The guys with the hardware advantage now have access to another innovation which is free of charge for them to use. They will do the same thing like they did in the past. They will read the scientific paper, understand it and adapt it to their ideas and concepts. Actually, I would say this answer to that question ''how to do it cheaper?'' Now they have the answer.

@nixCraft @briankrebs

Didn't take that long for them. Microsoft added DeepSeek-R1 to Azure.

@nixCraft
But I can see something positive for us as open source community here. If you look at their paper https://arxiv.org/pdf/2501.12948 on page 20, you will notice the number of contributors. And if we are able to come up with a solution where we use our own data or our own architecture and maybe something like ''federated learning'', we are ๐“ถ๐“ช๐”‚๐“ซ๐“ฎ on a good track.
@nixCraft what is this deepseek? is it better than gemini or copilot?
@nixCraft When stocks tank, thousands of people are laid off as soon as the C-suites can get the paperwork in order. And this time it didn't take some bizarre executive order from the guy who hangs out with tech-bros in the White House.
