After some German unions yesterday, more than 60 (!!) German universities left #X/#Twitter today. Some are already active on #Mastodon. They justified this with their commitment to fact-based communication and against antidemocratic forces. Values that promote diversity, freedom and science aren't present over there, they say. 👏🏻

By the way, there are only 109 (full) universities in Germany, so that is substantial. On the other hand, the list seems to also contain theological institutions and then the comparison would be to 428 higher education schools in Germany.

#OvGU Magdeburg is missing, of course. They still think very fondly of X as a place where they can reach their audience of journalists, politicians and the general public. 

This last bit makes me truly sad and embarrassed.

And to add to this: What makes me most sad is that the Universities completely uncritical repeat the advertisement of the big tech companies. X says they are important so #OvGU says they are important. Instagram says “we are the only way to reach a large audience”. #OvGU says: Instagram is the only way to reach a large audience.

No self esteem on part of some Unis.

Over 60 German-speaking universities and research institutions have decided to take a stand and collectively announce their decision to cease activities on Platform X (formerly Twitter). This withdrawal comes in response to the platform's current direction, which is incompatible with the core values of the participating institutions: openness to the world, scientific integrity, transparency, and democratic discourse.

@mho I wonder if it would help people to not be stuck on platforms they want to abandon to create a migration-intention-platform. In it you would enter platforms you want to leave and where you want to go (all encrypted and anonymized). then you could know when enough of your friends are ready and you do it together. basically, it makes something invisible visible: the desire to move. #foss #SocialNetwork #eXit #Xodus
