Ooh this whole Bambu Lab thing might've just set off BTT to make a replacement control board for the P1S!
@geerlingguy is X1Plus: Custom firmware for Bambu Lab X1 and X1 Carbon 3D printers https://github.com/X1Plus/X1Plus#readme not a compelling option any more, or are you just excited by the proliferation of options?
@mcrocker @geerlingguy pretty sure that's only for the X1 series? P1 hardware is quite different
@flipper @geerlingguy Ah. Thanks for that classification.
@geerlingguy having just ordered a P1S *days* before this drama hit, I would very much love that! Keep us updated please!
@geerlingguy I love this idea, but it will make BL machines into the thing that their buyers didn't want in the first place: A project, not a tool.
@balu ish, the people willing and able to do this sort of mod are different than the people that got their bambu lab machine to be s tool, but both sides will benefit from this. @geerlingguy
@balu @geerlingguy This isn't a requirement, it's an option for those of us who don't like having the rug pulled out from under us.
@geerlingguy sometimes forks are just too good opnsense vs pfsense is a good example, rsj should start wearing a shirt that says lucky. pls do followup on making minirack for specific use cases and matched up with the odd hw/sw req - add in a couple usb - one for dx and another for iso/backups #minirack blends #ci/cd #open source hw #object orientated #partimage #dd piped through gz
@geerlingguy That is a smart move indeed. I hope they can get flow tuning to work.
@geerlingguy I hope they call it the Bamboo shoot, since Bambu shot themselves in the foot.
@geerlingguy As much as I do like my X1C, I really can't stand Bambu and their walled garden approach. But what I can't stand the most are the Bambu sycophants who defend this decision. Brand loyalty is cult behavior. The best performing and open product is the best and that changes all the time
@littlemike yeah, same goes with Prusa fans sometimes too... like, they make printers, they are not your family. It's okay to be critical of them if they do things you don't like!
@geerlingguy I do see this far less (but do still see it!) on the Prusa side. And I totally agree. I think the difference is Prusa fans tend to be more tech knowledgeable whereas Bambu made a product that is the Apple of the 3D world - meaning people that don't know tech. That breeds fanboys because it allowed them to enter the world that was reserved for the more tech savvy. Like hah, I can 3d print too now! Look at me!
@geerlingguy I'd love it if you covered the progress on this periodically. Your technical background and relative newness to 3D printing makes you an ideal Guinea pig to represent many of us who recently got a printer and want to keep it under our control.
@geerlingguy I would buy it in a hartbeat for my P1S
Dang, and I was just about to buy an X1C
