Was reminded of this image again today:

"I don't wear 🏳️‍🌈 [queer pride] items to tell you who's in my bed. I wear them so the family across the street knows they are safe. So the couple in the restaurant know they aren't alone. So the boy who sees me notice him looking at dresses knows I won't judge. I wear because you make them hide."

Ever since seeing this, I have been wearing progressive pride buttons on each of my jackets and coats (and a cap).

Exactly the reason why I got a rainbow shoelace tied to my backpack. My shopping bag is also in rainbow colors. I've got my backpack always with me so I show it every day. The rainbow shopping bag (with a dancing Snoopy on it) is a good way to get ppl to smile that have been scared of me (big, heavy, always dressed in black with a lot of Black Metal Merch) instantly. I just have to take it out of my backpack to see smiling instead of scared faces and I love it!

@amalia12 I haven’t seen this before. It’s perfect 👍
@amalia12 We explained to our kid once what prejudice and discrimination is and since then he has a flag keyring on his rucksack, so people can see he is on their side. He was 7 at the time.
@amalia12 same reason why our whole street put up pride flags one year. A new guy moved in, and was asking in the pub if it was safe to put up a pride flag on pride month, as in previous places someone had broken his window. My bf suggested we all put them up so he wouldn’t feel alone, and in the end the whole street put them up. Not everyone does it every year now, but the point was made ❤️ This was in the Netherlands.

@amalia12 This 💯

@amalia12 As a middle-aged straight man I love to wear my rainbow t-shirt that my wife bought me. Makes the world a little more comfortable, a little less scary.
@amalia12 The same applies when displaying your own preferred pronouns.
@amalia12 Humm... Now that *I* said it, I have to update my profile...
🤣

Corollary: If you wear the rainbow, you are required to actually act if you see some of those people in trouble or the bigots causing the trouble. If you wear it as a moral support, but don't stand up to the bigots, you might as well not wear it at all.

Seen too many people in rainbow gear duck their head and turn away, to take those fine words seriously.

@amalia12 that… makes a lot of sense. It is time to show (and do) support all the time and find a nice place to get some of those.
Thank you for sharing this.

@amalia12 chest pound respect from me... great note
the pride fpr feeling human(ity) worth sharng, to be ally who stays caring (than being scared to express oneself)
@amalia12 Thanks for the reminder. I should start to follow.
