As a totally blind guy, I sometimes fantasize about just getting in a car, and driving to nowhere, getting completely, thoroughly lost, with absolutely no idea where I’m going, where I am, or how I got there. Granted, I can do that easily enough on foot, or, I suppose, by getting off at random stops on public transportation in an unfamiliar city, but it’s not quite the same thing.
@BorrisInABox I wanna be lost, then figure it out, but be fine with it.
@dodecahedron @BorrisInABox Get yourself a guide dog, walk with it and start thinking about something that will grab your attention while walking through construction. See what happens. I got totally turned around doing that once. I was still on a sidewalk, but going the opposite way on the other side of the street. I think a truck may have been in the way and my dog decided to go to the closest sidewalk. That really taught me to pay attention. Lol!
@BorrisInABox It's really not. The freedom to drive, turn on whatever music or none at all, and just be alone out there... yeah, sometimes I wish I could do that too.
@BorrisInABox I have a recurring dream where I'm at the wheel of a car, driving normally with absolutely no issues. Then I remember I'm blind and crash dramatically. Scares the crap out of me every time.
@mcourcel I have one where I'm doing that, remember I'm blind, thinking I'm going to crash into something at any minute, but I never do, and I wake up really confused because I didn't crash.
@BorrisInABox Did I tell you about the time when I drove my sighted but drunk college friends back to our colllege after they all got drunk? Was stopped by a cop on our way there and followed all the way back.
@ppatel @BorrisInABox Similar situation. Cop stops us; about 5 guys in a car. He tells the driver that he's not in a state to drive. He points at me and tells me to drive. I tell him I'm blind. He says: "You're not blind!" and shines his flashlight into my eyes. We all explode in ruccus laughter. Cop wasn't impressed.
@BorrisInABox when I was taking mobility lessons in high school, I used to love the drop offs, where the instructor would drop me off without telling me where I was, and then tell me where she would meet me. It was always such fun to figure out where I was and how to get to where I needed to be.
