There's a third party Mastodon app for Android which might be new to you, it's called Rodent and there's more info about it at:

➡️ https://mastodonrodent.app

There's also an official account you can follow at:

➡️ @rodentapp

It has some unusual features including browsing servers other than your own.

NEW PEOPLE: You don't have to use the official apps with Mastodon, in fact the third party apps are often much better than the official ones. More info at https://fedi.tips/which-apps-can-i-use-should-i-use-the-official-app-or-a-third-party-app

Rodent - a client for Mastodon

p.s. Just to make clear, this isn't meant to be promoting this app above others, I'm mainly just trying to get less known apps some visibility too. I'd never heard of Rodent before a couple of days ago.

If you have feedback on this app, let the app's maker know as they are in a position to do something with that info 🙂

@FediTips Have y'all tried Openvibe yet? I haven't, but it claims you can connect both your Mastodon and Bluesky accounts for a unified feed. I'm interested to know people's opinions if they've tried it.

@Jedi_Bard

Thanks for the info, but I'm not providing support for Bluesky due to the dubious nature of their owners (https://social.growyourown.services/@FediTips/113364985280012085).

This is why I have been trying to warn about #BlueSky. BlueSky has just been partially bought by a cryptocurrency company "Blockchain Capital" and appointed a blockchain / cryptocurrency expert to their board: https://bsky.social/about/blog/10-24-2024-series-a The board member is a bitcoin researcher involved with NFT analytics. BlueSky describe the tie-up with Blockchain Capital as a "natural partnership" and says the blockchain company has "a uniquely deep understanding of our decentralized foundation". @Jedi_Bard @FediTips I tried it briefly for a side project. It was not usable for posting anything with images, it compresses the hell out of them and crushes quality. I stopped using it after that, so didn’t get to see how things like replies and likes worked

@mwl Sounds tailor-made for you :flan_XD:

@rodentapp

@FediTips @rodentapp My question is, when will it be available on F-Droid? I try never to force my FOSS teams to pay the Google tax.

@FediTips @rodentapp

Oof, that FOMO tracker is dangerous. It creates the problem it purports to solve.

I think I'll stick with Fedilab.

@FediTips

@rodentapp

- no release on f-droid
- not open source
- no unified push support

I gave this app a try for a few days. I want to read my feed in strictly chronological order but this app always refreshes to latest. Showstopper so no good for me. Other apps do this too. Am I weird in wanting to do this?

There are some bugs such as CW not working. There are limited configuration settings. I desperately miss an OLED theme.

The threaded view of replies is really good. So I'm sad not to use this app. I like the notification squeak and the yellow theme too!

@ste Thanks for giving it a try! What do you mean by OLED theme? Totally black background?
@rodentapp
Yes that's right, an OLED-friendly background is completely black. It saves energy and IMHO is easier to read too!
@ste Cool, I'll try to add it in the next app update. Thanks
@ste Cool, I'll try to include that in the next app update!

@FediTips @rodentapp

I installed this app yesterday and was quite excited, because it looks good and has some interesting features. But I've realised that filters / content warnings don't seem to work, and that's a really big feature to be missing. Until that's sorted, I won't be using the app.

@sheepnik What do you mean by "content warnings don't seem to work"? Thanks!
@rodentapp I have lots of filters, and for some I choose to have them show in my feed with a content warning, so I can choose to look at them or not. In the Rodent app the content warning wasn't showing at all.
@FediTips Thanks for giving it a try, really appreciated! We move slowly but steady, always trying new features to find new ways to interact with Mastodon.
@FediTips @rodentapp So to be clear, this app isn't available on F-Droid? That's a shame, I really prefer installing my apps from there.
