When you click "favourite":
A message goes to the author of the favourited toot saying who "liked" it
The favourites counter for that toot goes up. Others can find out who favourited it.
That's about it.
When a toot is "boosted", then it shows up in the timelines of the followers of the booster. That is separate from "favouriting".
When you toot a message, it shows up in the timelines of your followers. I followed your account so I will see your posts.

Favourite
Boost
Reply

Favourite is a way to let the author know

You read their post
You like what they said
You sympathize with the author's predicament

.... ie, it does not necessarily mean the person doing the favourite actually likes the content of the post. But they want to communicate something to you without actually replying.

@bjb Thank you very much for your answers. If we reply to a post, then the reply won't be sent to everybody following, right? Only toots are sent to everybody?

@Godfrey642 Wir haben ein paar englische Bücher, z.B. Bücher von James Baldwin, Ursula K. LeGuin und natürlich Terry Pratchett :). But the german tax system is so complicated that we are a bit afraid of receiving payments from outside Germany. :)

I know Auf Wiedersehen == Goodbye, and other phrases that are not very useful.
