So TIL that you can highlight an icon in the App Switcher and tap Q to quit the app without ever foregrounding it… 🤦🏻‍♀️🤯

@sommer Yep. This is a great way to kill off a bunch of apps in just a few key presses.

You can also shift-tab to go in reverse.

@jeff @sommer This post inspired me to go figure out why shift-CMD-Tab was bringing up Keyboard Maestro's switcher. Apparently I turned of the CMD-Tab one but didn't get rid of the other one.
@sommer i use this all the time! 👌
@sommer You can also press H to hide the app
@sommer You can also start dragging a file, then cmd-tab to bring up the switcher during the drag, and drop the file into an app in the switcher. Great for those “I just used this app but I can’t find it in the Dock” situations.
@mikeash @sommer I wish more of these interactions were more discoverable.
@mikeash I think, I knew this some time in the past, but forgot, because like many other shortcuts, it is at least sub-optimal for left-handed users, so it just doesn't stick.
@fab1An Oh yeah, that’s no good. You need a spare tab key on the right side of the keyboard.
@mikeash As an avid user of @KeyboardMaestro I could create something like that, but I’m afraid that after this many years of command-tabbing with my left hand, I would not be able to get used to a new shortcut. Also, I would have a hard time finding a key that's not already used in some other shortcut. 😅
@fab1An @KeyboardMaestro I took a minute looking at my keyboard before I replied, looking for a suggestion that would even work as a joke, but I got nothing.
@fab1An @mikeash it's amusing seeing all these folks get excited about an Apple feature I've had for a decade. You can also quit (or even force quit) and relaunch the application with a couple keystrokes. BTW, my keys are configurable, so for left handed people, you could change the `q` to something else.

@sommer That's really great - Thanks!
Took me a minute to remember that the App Switcher is the thing you get on macOS with ⌘-Tab. For a while I thought you were talking that other thing - digs around on the web - oh yeah called Stage Manager.

I've always just repeatedly hit ⌘-Tab to get to the next app - but I see that the sideways arrow keys work AND up/down arrows shows just that app's active windows!

@sommer I have been writing professionally, for cash money, about the Macintosh for decades and…just learned this. THANK YOU.
@glennf @sommer I think it only really became useful around 10.7 when Apple added the automatic termination system (which lets an app indicate it can be quit by being terminated instead of through the usual path, i.e. nothing needs to be confirmed or saved). The extra speed on average made it incredibly useful.
@glennf @sommer No offence either of you, it’s definitely a trick. But it also makes me wonder what tricks I’m missing.
@tewha @glennf I feel like I discover one of these "tricks" about once or twice a year that causes me to feel like "how on EARTH didn't I know this?!"
@sommer @tewha Someone pointed out a couple years ago the Command-Shift-period feature in the Finder that reveals hidden files and I was like WHAT! WHAT!
@glennf @sommer I probably first read that about the same time you did, and I don’t think I’ve ever used it on purpose except the day I read about it. I just never think of it. 😀
@tewha @sommer I find it intermittently VERY handy.
@glennf @sommer My first reaction was “no way that works, that’s so stupid, someone must’ve just made that up.” Nope.
@glennf @sommer It’s only just now that I realize it probably stands for “show dot files” whereas at the time all I could think of is “why is show hidden files a variant of cancel?”

@glennf @sommer @tewha Yes! I learned this like ... LAST YEAR, or the year before 😂

Did not know the quit trick either, today I learned!

@sommer also you can start dragging a file, cmd-tab, and drop onto the icons
@airspeedswift @sommer TIL *two* things, putting me well over my “you learn something new every day” quota.
@jamesdempsey @airspeedswift @sommer Nice, you can take the day off tomorrow!
@sommer I'd rather have a close button instead of hidden shortcuts, but nice to know. Thank you!
